    Talented rabbits

My rabbits are very talented. Starting with a simple shelter box they took six months producing these sculptures of their home on Otay Mesa. This one is entitled simply Otay Mesa And this one is cloud over Mount Otay. It took some delicate nibbling to produce the cloud without having it break...

    POssums possums possums

I don't know where they're all coming from but so far I've trapped four possums in my back yard here in San Diego. They have some of my does so spooked they are hiding in their nest boxes. For sure they don't feel safe enough to breed.

    Broken back?

One of my recent litters (4 weeks old) was dragging its hind legs behind it the other morning. I assumed mama had accidentally jumped on it and broken its back. It seemed in perfect health in every other way except for the paralyzed hind quarters. OK, one of the hazards of rabbit raising but now...

Growout cage bulging at the seams

I usually try to time my litters so that cage space is available but due to 2 accidental breedings ( The sex change fairy visited and a "doe" became a buck) I have more growing rabbits than cage space. It looks as though I will have to start butchering younger than I normally do. At least I'll...

    AAARGH! A cage bit me

I've never had a biting rabbit but a couple of days ago I was moving cages around and left the corner of one sticking out, then ran into the darn thing a couple of minutes later. I swear when you get to my age your skin gets like tissue paper. To make it worse I'm on Warfarin blood thinner so...

    Two does sharing a nest?

I thought I had all of my does and bucks seperated into different cages but a sneaky little buck was masquerading as a doe and some how managed to impregnate all three of the does he was with. He must have done his work at night because I never caught him at it. I had no idea till one of the...

    Another nice litter by Rachel

Rachel, the Rex doe MSD was so kind as to give me to get me started again after my heart operation just had her usual litter of 9 fat sausages. Last litter she had one huge kit born dead and only 2 normal sized kits. I was worried the huge kit had torn her up so I am relieved she is back to...

Great new forage plant from Africa

I managed to get hold of some monkeytail cowpeas this Spring. It is widely grown in Africa but rather hard to come by in the US. It can be fed fresh, green pods and all, but it's main use in Africa is as hay for goats and cattle. It is right up there with alfalfa in protein and my rabbits loved...

    A rabbit when molting

Is pretty revolting. My buck Reuben is going through that right now. He's the raggediest rabbit you ever saw. Clumps of hair sticking out in all directions. Every time I pet him I end up with a handfull of hair. I can't find my shedding comb. I guess I'll have to buy a new one, then the old one...

Have to change my blue rex bucks name I guess

I've been calling him Code Blue but as he reaches a year old his guard hair, which on a Rex is barely longer than the fur, has been turning to a silver color. I guess I'll have to start calling him Silver. This guy is magnificent and is proven. I've been hoping to find him a good home. I don't...

Concerns about Rachel ( My main brood doe)

Rachel has always had exactly 9 kits at every breeding till the last one. That time she had one really huge kit that was born dead; probably because it took so long to get out, and two normal sized ones. I'm afraid the huge kit may have harmed her somehow but we're just getting into the hot...

    Be cautious with sweet clover

When my doctor heard I often used herbs and herbal teas he gave me a list of plants to avoid. Since my open heart surgery and diagnosis of atrial fibrilation I have been on Warfarin. According to the list he gave me I should avoid sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis) in any form. It is a natural...

    Singing to rabbits

My buck Reuben got so big I had to back two cages together to let him get his exercise. That means two shelves at opposite ends and his hiding and play tunnel. Somehow I came up with a song I call "Bunny Boy" to the tune of "Pony Boy". Whenever I start singing it he starts showing off, leaping...

    Great (funny) rabbit commercial.

I had to laugh out loud when I saw this. It reminded me of the movie,"The Birds" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuVncD8Mo_w You might also be interested in how the rabbit was trained for the commercial. You may have a future star in one of your hutches. :lol...

    Gotta do it

My least favorite rabbit chore is butchering time but I have 9 ready and need the cage room. Good weather, cool and cloudy but no chance of rain. I guess I'd better pull up my socks and get to work.

Check this out. It contains data sheets on most plants used as animal fodder. I have it bookmarked so I can get to it easily. http://www.feedipedia.org/

    Cowpea hay

After reading this report from Purdue University I have gotten very interested in growing cowpeas this Summer to dry as hay. According to this it has the same protein value as alfalfa and should be easier to grow in the garden. I was also interested to note that the peas themselves can be fed...

    Finished my growout cage.

I finally finished up my growout cage. It's 49 inches by 31 inches. The old one was getting too crowded. It's too warm to butcher now but I'll have to get some done the next cool weather. These aren't the best pics but it's hiding behind my pea vines for shade so it's hard to get a good shot of it.

    Time to move my buns

I finally finished my big growout cage 4 feet by 4 feet. Now I have to move all the buns in my smaller growout cage over so I have room for the new batch in the smaller cage. I guess it's time to start butchering since I haven't been selling many of them, even when I advertised breeding trios...
