    Thinking about getting goats

We got our first goats a year ago, after a LOT of talking with friends who had goats. Everything that is said about goats getting out of fencing is true. As was said earlier..do the fencing right the first time..don't give them the chance to get out. What worked for us was a simple...

At what age do the kits start coming out of the nest box

I've been finding kits wandering around on their own shortly after the eyes open...about 10 days. That's the angoras. The new zealands stay in a bit longer..maybe 2 weeks, as do the Americans. I have 2 types of nest boxes...one is a traditional type, where the doe hops in and nurses...and nest...

    An Outdoor Colony

If it's around a hill, the buns will dig into the hill for their burrows, and probably be quite happy inside the fence. electronet works. there are a couple of people on the yahoo colony forum who use it. They move the rabbits around from place to place on a pasture. Personally, I think that...

    Disease? feeding? poison? genetic problem?

Thank you all for the ideas and thoughts on this. I'm crossing fingers that it IS a genetic issue with that doe and her offspring. Stools: There appeared to be normal bunny berries, and I didn't see anything odd or watery in the droppings. Could easily have missed something tho, and the amount...

    Disease? feeding? poison? genetic problem?

The doe who died first(in May) was a big American girl. She'd had 3 litters, was just over 2.5 years old. She was still in with the 4 kits left from her last litter (they were weaned, but not adult yet). she was eating and drinking well, then one morning Mike found her dead in the pen...about 1...

    Disease? feeding? poison? genetic problem?

Odd wasting disease going on here...but only with select colonies. (a new thought at the bottom of post) Back in May (while I was gone) we had an adult doe suddenly go super skinny and die. (she was fine when I left the house on the rabbit run, but died a week later). Down to skin and bones...

    Selling Pelts

dying fur is pretty easy..rabbit fur take color VERY easily. When it's in the form of a pelt, you need to make sure the pelt is fully cured, and research the various dyes available. I use dylan cold water dye since you only use warm water, instead of HOTHOT water (which can destroy the pelt)...

    Let the Countdown Begin

:) That's how it works here, too. Unless it's critical and something is going to DIE without "the project" being done immediately, it doesn't get done. You will need more room rather quickly, but you know that :D Nice way to keep the hay and feeders in a contained unit! Looking forward to...

    Timothy Hay

any green plant has lignin in it. (the woodier that plant, the more lignin) When the plant fiber is compressed, it creates a heat, which releases the lignin..and the lignin turns into a sort of "glue". The hay cubes are made sort of like the pellets are made....hay is chopped into a predefined...

Trying to do the Christian thing

Check with your local HS to find out options for getting a high school equivalency or a GED. The counselors there will know all the things available to you/her. Even if it's an adult learning thing. Or can at least point you in the right direction for your locality. (here we have a college run...
