    Bad timing!

Hello ColdBrook, I'd say take the doe with you. You need the peace of mind about her, so you can focus on your MIL. And your MIL might enjoy something to cuddle (if it's allowed). With a week to go, the doe should easily adjust to the new environment in time to kindle. By the time you...

    color ID help?

Hello Nyctra, That first rabbit is agouti (chestnut), not steel. When you breed two steels (EsE) together, you'll get about 1/4 agouti (EE), 1/2 steel (EsE), and the rest apparently black (EsEs). If those red ones are related, then you can be pretty sure the dark steel rabbit's white hairs...

    Mineral Salt Blocks

Hi all, I am about ready to transition away from pellets onto natural feeding, so I'm looking into sources for mineral salt blocks. How long do the 4# blocks last? I have 3 meat mutt does, plus ltters, in each pen. If I have to get a flavored block (apple or something), might the rabbits eat...

She just keeps on giving surprises!

Both parents are definately steel. Everything I've read, and my own experience, says Es e covers up all the banding with black, sometimes with a little ticking left over -- but not enough to look like a steel the way yours do, especially Goof Ball. So I'm still stumped about the red kits.

    Oat hay for nestbox

Hello Starshotbandit, I got a free bale of oat hay once and used it for the nest boxes. The rabbits loved it. Wish I had access to more on a regular basis.

She just keeps on giving surprises!

Hello GBov, Are you sure your buck really is a steel? Steel must have Es E, while red/fawn/tort/frostie must have e e. The doe could carry e, but I don't see how a steel buck could produce anything non-extention. Maybe he's an agouti with dfficult to detect rings. Some of my agouti and...

    Starting a colony...have question(s)

Hello Lazy M, I went with 9' x 12' for three does (36 sq ft each). It just looked like the right amount of space for them. It worked out very well for them, but I found it a little crowded for me to position food and water and nest boxes, and do clean up and such. With raised platforms like...

    Is this Steel?

It looks steel to me, but it's still quite young. Some of my kits look like that, then more bands appear later.

What "actual" color is my New Zealand?

I agree. Chinchilla. Bunnygirl, chinchilla is a color pattern. It means each individual hair is striped black and white (like a candy cane), giving a gray effect. But she still looks blue to me in these pictures. Maybe it's just the camera, or she might be a blue chinchilla, meaning her...

Question! What color is the bunny in my avatar?

Hello Bunnygirl, It looks blue from here, but the avatar pic is really tiny. There's no detail. Can you post a bigger pic? If you brush it's fur the wrong way, do you see different colors on each hair? Or is it all pretty much the same from base to tip? Does it have any white markings?

    Growout Pen Sizes

Hello Kotapony, Ok. Worst case, none of your kits sell, and all three does have greatly over-sized litters at the same time, say 15 kits each. That's 45 - 8 week old kits for at least one day. Now say something comes up and you can't get to butchering for a while, so those 8 week old kits...

    New Zealand New Colors

Sorry, wild1slilfarm. If they are showing chinchilla color, they cannot be steel carriers. Steel is dominant. EsE gives you the steel pattern, whether in gold or silver. Es with anything else gives you a solid color, even if the rabbit has the chin gene, too. If your does are showing the...

    Is it time to sell?

Yes, people will want to know, but you can explain that you can't tell yet. If you're open and relaxed about it, most people won't mind. Those who do mind are welcome to buy elsewhere. And someone might even be able to teach you how. You need to check your local laws before you sell. In my...

Dog food is so expensive... If I bred small show rabbits....

I feed two German shepherd crosses. I kill the bunnies at about 5 to 6 weeks, when they reach 1 lb 12oz, and freeze them whole. At feeding time, I thaw one rabbit just enough to cut it in half with a steak knife without anything squishing out. Each dog gets a half, and I alternate who gets...

    indoor outdoor colony?

No. One foot deep would not be deep enough to kindle. They need about 1 foot of vertical space in the nest, so in most cases, the roof would just cave in for being too thin. But they will love digging in the dirt anyway. Once they get the hang of the cat doors, I'm sure they will use them --...
