    Ruptured stomachs on processing rabbits

That's what I thought with the first one, but after 5 of them had that and we were ultra careful after that first one to make sure it wasn't something we had done, and none of the other rabbits in any other litter having that problem when using the same processing method, I wondered if it had...

    Ruptured stomachs on processing rabbits

We sent 6 rabbit kits to freezer camp over the last few days from one litter of American Blue Chinchilla cross bunnies. They were 9 weeks old and just over the 5 pound mark. Method of dispatch was a pellet rifle, after which they were hung up by the hind legs for 10 minutes to bleed out. When...

Silver Fox for meat?? (getting frustrated)

I am crossing NZW and Silver Fox and am thrilled with the outcome. The litters are large (Chloe successfully raised 11 of the 12 she delivered), they grow fast, they have lovely dispositions and I just processed two at 10 weeks that dressed out at 4 and 4.5 pounds! I just posted a pic today of...

    My Keeper Doe

This is Cinnamon at about 12 weeks and 7 pounds. She's the doe I plan to keep out of my favorite NZ doe and the Silver Fox buck to replace Poppy, who, on her 3rd and last try as a mother delivered 10 beautiful babies but has so far lost 4 to neglect. Poppy will go to Freezer camp when what's...

How I pick my keeper mutts....

:) That's one way to do it! Personality is important too! It's far better than the way I agonize over it and second guess myself constantly!

    Haven't been here in a while...checking in.

Silly me! I forgot about the unspoken rule here that you can't talk about babies without showing proof you have them! Here are some snapshots for you of my popples! The last litter of Silver Fox/ New Zealand kits I just weighed yesterday and at 10 weeks, they're all 5.5 to 6 pounds each...

    Haven't been here in a while...checking in.

It's always good to stop by and see what's hoppening at Rabbit Talk. I've been so busy I've neglected the chat, though not the buns. My rabbitry is growing by...yeah, hops and bounds. Chloe delivered 12 kits, 11 of which are still thriving 3 weeks later to the SF buck. They're all either black...

    Why are kits dying?

I've experienced something very similar recently and it turns out, my Silver Fox doe hops right in every morning and feeds the kits on her own but wants nothing to do with evening feedings so I'm going to just start taking them up to her once a day since they seem to be thriving with just that...

    I think I made a bad call

Well, that didn't work as well as I'd hoped either. I gave Poppy her two and the one scrawny SF kit and one other SF kit. She messed all through the nesting box. The babies are now soaked and dirtied and were uncovered and left exposed. I brought them all back in, put them back in with the...

    I think I made a bad call

Thanks Maggie...Do you think I should give her just the two or maybe give her two of the SF kits as well? I almost forgot! Here is a picture of Chloe's litter...minus the white kit (did I maybe dream it?).

    I think I made a bad call

I'm feeling pretty bad about my recent decisions with my latest litters. I took two kits from my doe Poppy, who kindled the day after my SF doe, Summer. Since she had such a small litter (3) and one had what was presumably an omphalocele and was culled, I figured I'd breed her right back...

Only three kits - and one has "an issue"

Thanks Kyle. That's what I'm leaning toward. It cannot be comfortable and like you pointed out, its skin doesn't seem very normal - like it's super thin. I cannot imagine it having much quality of life. The other two are fat and very healthy with no defects.

Only three kits - and one has "an issue"

Poppy delivered three kits for her first litter. One has a big reddish ball around its navel - an umbilical hernia? It also looks bruised around its back legs and head unless it's going to be an odd color? All the others from this cross were solid colors. These are NZ/FG cross kits. It seems to...

Help! Six kits, possible bad mother!

Oh dear...my babies all survived the night but barely. I don't think they've been fed. Mama made a mess of the nest and they were damp, chilly and hardly moving when I found them this morning. I have them inside, warmed and am rebuilding the nest and will see if I can just return it to her for a...

Help! Six kits, possible bad mother!

Thanks Frecs! I feel a bit better now about it. I just peeked in on them again and Summer is still pulling fur. I'm not sure if there are more kits yet and I interrupted her labor or if she's making sure they have enough blanket for this colder weather (supposed to be in the lower 30s tonight)...

Help! Six kits, possible bad mother!

My silver fox was given her last chance and just delivered 6 live kits (2 dead) today. She pulled tons of fur but one was out on the wire. I pulled out the two not fully formed dead kits and put dry shavings and hay in the nest box, then tucked all 6 beautiful babies back into the back of it in...

    WWRTD?

What Would Rabbit Talkers Do? I asked myself..and I couldn't answer so I'm asking you! Here's the story. We have a SF doe, Summer who's presumably bred to my SF buck and due next week. She's not yet raised a successful litter. She lost two litters before I got her (yeah, I got her anyway!) and...

    A day of opposites.

Ah Grumpy, my heart goes out to you. It was such a selfless decision you made. Reggie is so fortunate to have such a caring Dad. I adopted two sons back in the late 90s and in July, 2000, their Dad (my hubby) was killed in a plane crash. I wish I had waited till the next morning to tell them...

    What color is this bun?

I'll get better snapshots when it's not 11 PM and a nighttime run to check the kits because one climbed out of the nestbox and I couldn't sleep without a final check to be sure they were tucked in. I got them out to look them over. I thought they were all black but this one kit is ...I don't...

    Should I buy them?

For what it's worth, my .02 cents is that it wouldn't hurt to look at them, but make sure they're all healthy. Wouldn't be worth bringing them home if there was any possibility of infecting your place with anything. The more "closed to outsiders" you can keep your rabbitry, the healthier it will...
