I tried the frozen water bottles. Not only are the rabbits not using them, ignoring them, but two are trying to eat the plastic and one chewed a big hole in it before I caught him. Back to the drawing board for cooling ideas.

Some of my rabbits ignore them, others done. I put a frozen 2 liter in Rosebud's pen. Checked a few minutes later. She had knocked it on it's side and was laying against it along with three of her kits. Smart bunnies!

I may start dunking everyone in the mornings. But then they spend so much time and energy cleaning themselves. Right now, I'm keeping as many of the pens as I can under the shade and that helps tremendously.

Give them a couple tries, might take some time to get used to the idea.

Probably chewing it because of the cold condensation. Maybe wrap the bottle in a sleeve/ leg of worn out shirt or pants? Like a tube with a twist tie/ knot at each end?

I'll see what I have. Most of my worn out shirts are worn for dog chores and aren't fit for anything. But I do have lots of socks.

There is no way I have enough room to freeze all of the bottles I will need. My best option is to hold the bottle in place along the shared wire sides between cages.

I will be using my box fan and may buy misters as well to keep the bunnies cool this summer.

This may seem a little radical. But what about buying a 2-gallon sprayer and "misting" the rabbits several times a day? Keep the fans on high!

Grumpy.

I myself take a trip around the cages in the heat of the day with a spray bottle misting the bunnies making sure to get their ears well. When I first started this some of my rabbits weren't very receptive to the mist but after a few days they came around and will just lay their enjoying the bit of relief.

I am at work from 6:45-4:30pm
I live 5 miles from Lake Erie, the humidity would mold my 50 year old wooden barn. It would soak the rabbit pans and make the place stink. I'm having a hard time now with spilled water making poop soup and attracting flies.

I also have a lot of extension cords, because there is no wiring in the barn.

__________ Mon May 28, 2012 4:10 pm __________

I bought a box fan, but with the warnings on box fans starting barn fires, I'm afraid to use it. Adding mist and a box fan on an open extension cord and me at work just seems like it's asking for trouble.

Mine sometimes seem to ignore them, or actively chew and claw at them. I do end up with holes sometimes, and I just replace them.

Not usually that quickly, though... I'd try making sure he got a bottle that had no dents in it.

Even if they seem to ignore them, that large an amount of ice does affect the temperature in the cage. :)

Poor bottles didn't even last 15 minutes from freezer to removal. I worry about them ingesting the plastic.

Just what is the danger with box fans and fire, anyway? I keep seeing mention of that too. Is it the fur? Faulty wiring?

Wow! Yeah, mine don't get chewed that fast, not even close! I might have to replace a couple a month!

I think it's fur and dust, because as one source put it, they weren't made for continuous agricultural use. I just can't spend $$$ on a large ag fan, and haven't seen one really except the farmtek page.

__________ Mon May 28, 2012 5:38 pm __________

went to check, I put them in at 3:30pm, at 6:30pm, I'm down 4, the first chewed by the time I finished putting all of the bottles in, and two more down within two hours. Those Rexes!!!

What about the ceramic floor tiles ?? I read about putting those in the freezer ... then placing in the cages... seems even after the Cold is gone from them... the ceramic would still give a Cool sensation...

__________ Mon May 28, 2012 7:33 pm __________

One brand in particular (Lasko) has been implicated in several barn fires... We have one... but periodically i take it apart and use a blower to clean out the fur and dust.

maybe I'll use it one season while I look for another. Currently, my oscillating stand house fan is out there.

__________ Mon May 28, 2012 9:06 pm __________

Terra cotta ones? I'll go looking for some tomorrow.

If they're eating them, they're not overheating!

hmm :hmm: I was wondering. Fava had her feet in the water dish Thursday, it was so hot. If they were hot enough, they would have used them.

__________ Tue May 29, 2012 7:12 am __________

Found the tile at home depot, going to get some this evening. Guess I'll drink the rest of that water.

They're junk to start with. I've replaced several of them in the last year. They begin to malfunction at the first sight of dust. You have to keep them cleaned and dusted or they will overheat and shut down completely and forever.

They weren't really designed for use in barns. They're very much a light duty type fan.

Thanks, Satins. My neighbor has industrial type fans in his barn (he raises mules and donkeys)- I will have to ask where he bought them. I think they were around $100, but better to spend the money on a good fan than lose everything to a fire. When I get the info I will post it here- he usually finds good deals.
