Evil Fire Ants Attacking From the Depths of Heck

You might try two other things. 1) switch to an all wire cage and 2) use granualar ant bait around the base of the hutches. bifenthrin, a common insecticide in ant killer, is a very small molecule. It easily falls in tiny cracks and crevasses making it in effective. A bait keeps it on the...

    Successfully shrink bagged bunny!

I found that if I'm really careful when I take the feet off the rabbit, I don't get bone fragments. That's what usually gets me when using my foodsaver. I cut the tendons all around leg near the joint and then use a kind of sideways snapping motion. The joint breaks apart and the tips of the...

    Ant problem in Florida..

The best fire ant killer I've found at a hardware store is Ortho's powdered fire ant killer. It comes in a black bottle with a yellow lid. You just sprinkle it around the nest and wham-o, dead ant, dead ant - dead ant, dead ant, dead ant. It's active ingredient is acephate. It stinks to high...

    2nd meal using rabbit...

If you guys are grinding up the meat, don't forget to save the carcasses for home made broth! There is nothing better than homemade broth. I usually save all my raw bones (or slightly cooked in the case of steaks) and throw them all together in a big pot with the usual spices and mirepoix and...

    Fine-X feeder repair.

Just a quick add to this. If you made the same mistake I did and bought the hay/pellet combo feeder, it's easy to modified back into a pellet feeder. Drill out the rivets of the insert, turn it upside down and around and then re-rivet it back in. Now you have a functional feeder.

    ready to pop!

HA! Last time she had 9 kits and 7 before that, so she might be working her way up to 11. My FW had 11 last litter.

    ready to pop!

Daisy is one of my NZW's. She's at about 28/29 days post breeding. It looks like she's about ready to pop! Here's hoping for a big litter!

    Hiding a rabbitry

I second the bamboo, if it will grow there, which I'm pretty sure it will. Just get a clumping variety. I feed my rabbits bamboo all the time. You can hedge it like a shrub if you don't want it growing too tall. Once established it needs very little care. You can separate the clumps and...

Seriously, I may possibly be ...

One thing I've started doing to avoid having issues with the bladder is to squeeze/massage the belly area where the bladder is to get all the urine to come out. You can do it before hanging them, if you hang them. I do everything on a cutting board now and don't worry about hanging.

    Knife recommendation

I've been using this knife and really like it. http://www.katom.com/135-31620.html Katom is a pretty good website too. Just be careful if they break up your order, they will charge you extra shipping.

How long does it take you to disassemble a rabbit?

    back button double post! sorry!

How long does it take you to disassemble a rabbit?

that was one fatty rabbit. It looked to be a little older than my 12 week old fryers. One issue I have is with the ribs; they're always a little flimsy. The ribs in this video seemed a little more rigid.

I took step one towards meat rabbits today!

Hopefully there is wire on the bottom and you can raise the whole coop up a couple of feet so you can easily clean the poop out from underneath it. Get some fruit trees for the yard and dump the droppings in a big ring around them. My peach and plum trees have never looked so good!

I took step one towards meat rabbits today!

One rabbit, at our house, is enough for 2 adults and two small children with left overs, so maybe 3 or 4 for your needs. If you get a large meat rabbit breed, like the NZs, or cali's, you should not have to separate the sexes prior to processing. I do mine around 3 months after birth. I grow...

How long does it take you to disassemble a rabbit?

From cage to fridge, I'd say I'm right on par with you. I don't joint them, but shouldn't add too much time to the clock. I've probably done about 20 rabbits now.
