    New colors for my elops

A friend and I are working on a color project. I bred her chocolate buck to my blue doe (whose mother is a known chocolate carrier). The chocolate buck has a sibling who is either a smoked pearl or blue point (or some other shaded color). The buck's three generation pedigree is all blues...

    Diseases We Share With Rabbits

Our state is ranked 2nd or 3rd in the US for human Tularemia cases, and although it is likely transferred most often by ticks here, I can not bring myself to allow my rabbits to play in my yard...where lots of wild rabbits also play regularly.

Corners of the South Show (Shreveport, LA)

It was a great show! I am so happy they they put that club and show together. Austin in an awesome young man, and so are the people helping him. They are very nice people, and they deserved to have a great show. That Giant Chin that won the rare breed specialty is a stunning animal!

    Looking for a New Breed

Mini Lops would be good if you liked Flops. I actually like the mini lops better than the flops--the don't seem to shed as much. You might consider Thriantas, Havanas, Lilacs (rare), velveteen lops, or mini rexes, all in the 4-6 lb range. Lots of people are enjoying the Dwarf Hotots, and they...

A rabbit walking on just its forelegs

Apparently they don't always walk on their front feet, but it is a genetic condition-"acrobat gene". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq1OMW2w0bs

    Love is in the Air

I bred three vlops this week. I've never seen does lift quite so high before! And I've never had a buck squeal and hold on like this one did. There is something in the air!

Pros & Cons of choosing to focus on one breed or multiple

I started this hobby 4 1/2 years ago with about six cages. I few months later, I bought 24 more used ones, and built four large hutches. This summer, I bought sixteen more used cages. I am at my limit, because if I buy more it will be work and not fun any more. I do not keep the cages all...

Woohoo My Velveteen Lops have arrived

I plan to breed my vlops when they are 6-8 months old. If they are like elops, it may take them a little longer to mature and some may need to wait until 8 months or so to breed the first time.

Woohoo My Velveteen Lops have arrived

I bet there will be some reasonably priced nice vlops with 13-14 in ears that will be on the market the next year. lol

Woohoo My Velveteen Lops have arrived

Show quality elops are usually between $100 and $200. Non show are usually $50-100. I'm surprised by the velveteen for $200. They are not consistent enough for that price imho. I paid $30-60 each for the vlops I recently purchased. I like the longer ears. I think they need them to balance...

    New Bunny pics

Cute! I got some minis last week, too. One of them binkies around her cage! I think these guys will be fun.

What color is this? accepted 4-H

I recently bred a chestnut elop to a broken blue tort. I got three broken chestnuts, two torts, two broken blue torts, and a black. If a chestnut carries non-extension like mine, you can get more torts and fawns/oranges, and if they both carry dilutes, you should get some opals, creams and...

anyone going to the Arkansas State fair?

I sincerely hope you can help the current livestock director understand more about the energy, time and money most of us put into showing our rabbits. By the time we pay breed club fees, sanction fees, entry fees, fair tickets, motels and food, the cost of showing rabbits gets up there. So, to...

    Chocolate Tort?

Well, hopefully I will know next week whether or not Charlie even carries chocolate. I only kept those with the type I liked, and if any of them carries chocolate it is just a bonus. I get to spend the whole winter test breeding--fun, fun!

Best vehicle to take rabbits to show?

I have a pick up with a shell on it. The rabbits are in there most of the year for traveling, but when it is over 80, they ride in the crew cab. The problem with a pick up is getting the rabbits in and out of the back of a truck. I'm too old for that, so we installed a bedslide. Much easier...

    Do your does "look" pregnant?

I have a doe due Tuesday, too. I like to watch them while they are stretched out resting. If you watch their stomach for a couple of minutes, you will see quick movements of the kits feet. They poke out for just a second. Sometimes you will see lots of big rolling movements (small rolling...

    Chocolate Tort?

Usually the whisker bed and ears are pretty deep rich brown by now in torts. This one is definitely different....Or maybe not...I found an a picture of one I sold and it had a lighter butterfly... so, this one is probably just a light tort. Sometimes, it is just hard to tell.

    Chocolate Tort?

With convention busy-ness, I had not looked closely at my new tort elop, but yesterday I looked again at this three week old, and I think it might be a chocolate tort. The nose and ear lacing are much lighter than on my prior torts. The sire, Charlie Bucket (named after characters in the...
