Big sleepy mix kit. Lol

Zero kits & Darkie foster. She's a calm mom, doesn't care at all when I handle the kits, just turns an ear, feeds them well, too. Just gotta get her to have them all live and not loose any. Will have another chance if these continue to grow well.

I've had six week old young bucks terrify all their siblings and be nippy with me. Earned him a stew pot.....
Yeah. Supposedly have a guy wanting 5-6 for a butcher class. So, chose the biggest 6 to grow out for him, she's one of them. Just hope he shows up the first week of October, as planned.
Would of been dog food if he hadn't of contacted me in time.

I'm being extra strict these days. Culled two feed dumpers and a water bowl sitter kits last week. I'm tired of dealing with problems, so away they go!

Had to swap the bowl for a nipple on Swirl's cage. I had filled up the water bin last night. He drained it completely over night....About to buy new nipples.

Also bought 4 bags of 16% for the bucks & dry does 2 days ago. But realized I should feed this to the dry does today, so it starts tomorrow. Trying to keep track on how long a 50# bag lasts them. Might be worth it to continue.
18% wasn't available, should be delivered tomorrow to the store.

Seems like I've been sweeping up the barn every 3 days, after pan dumping, and there's always more to clean! 😵 But it's finally getting decent. Hay is the bulk of the mess. Ugh.

Zero's 3 kits & Darkie foster. Fat n happy. Foster still content to sleep in the nest than explore. *phew*

Darkie kits. Kicked them out today, lol, to start growing up. Black ones in background.

No pics. Freckles kits, 2 escaped. Forgot about the jfeeder hole I didn't cover up. It's covered now and everyone is in the nest napping.

3 does and a buck will be culled in about a week, if they don't sell. Going to breed the buck first. The broken tort will be bred and probably be listed or culled in about 2mo as well. And the blue rex will also be culled in a couple of weeks, no listing her. Looks like all of her kits will probably be dog food, too. Not seeing anything worthwhile yet.
Should free up some space, though, I've got does in pairs & with their dams, so the space will be used up real quick. 😅
Gotta find a better poop pan for the one cage that's missing it, then will use the top row of the stackers.

Made a posing & picture taking nook!
Need to make an attached phone holder as well. Then add a couple of clips to hold info cards on the back wall, so IDing will be easier when cropping pics.

A minor suggestion: If you are going to use this primarily for getting posed pics for your own use and posting on here, maybe put a grid on that back wall. That would make it easier to see the shape of the rabbit and compare them. Rabbit A peaks at x squares high and is x squares wide but rabbit B peaks at y squares etc.

Ugh. Is depth actually needed?
Bit more meat on a longer, higher reaching spine, I guess?
Still keeping her, she's great otherwise.
Looks like my table needs an extended arm for the phone. 🤔 On the table itself is too close.

Phone broke, using old one, pics are kinda bad.

Posed a bunch to choose. Looks like this ones a cull.

What even is this? Which do I believe?? Ugh. Same doe, 1 second later, just flipped sides. Garbage to the left, great to the right.

Then their sis who was tossed out for being mean. Has chilled a bit. But is shape worth saving her?

Cull for sure.

I'm thinking this one might have to be a cull in the end. Sis to the opal mutt.

Previously kept back. Shedding in a funny way.

Proven two does. Waiting until their replacements are proven before culling. Didn't with Blackie and that sucked.

Yesterday and today, some does have been humping their kits, so, been breeding some does.
This guy can't wait for the new batch of snacks that Choco and Baymax will make.

Yes, more depth translates into more meat. The spine isn't longer, it's just thicker/more muscled. The loin can actually be the biggest chunk of meat on a good rabbit.

Here is a good deep loin:

Sorry there's no point of reference, but that loin weighed right around a pound and a quarter, all by itself. It came from an adult Satin doe. My fryer loins look like that, just a bit smaller.
The blue mark on the meat cut corresponds roughly to the blue line here (not the rabbit that the meat cut came from, but very similar):

If you put your pointer finger at the top of the line and your thumb on the bottom of the line - on the rabbit of course - you can actually feel how thick the loin is. You're feeling for the chunk of meat shown in the first photo.

Right, but spine does have to be longer to reach higher up, it's not just muscle bulging up 1-2 inches above the spine like on morbidly obese draft horse butts. Or is it? In the quartered picture, you can see the spine level with the muscle. So, IDK. I'm in a butcher posing group and I stare at the pics often trying to absorb what is there.

I've not noticed that the spine is all that much longer. In fact, it seems to me that as a whole, on the table the rabbits with the deepest loins often look more compact that the ones with poorer depth; they are more short-coupled, with their width approximating their height. After butchering, they just have a lot more muscle surrounding the spine (not above). Maybe they have a more arched spine - which would not necessarily be apparent after butchering - so possibly it is a bit longer, but I don't think necessarily. I'll have to try to get some measurements next time we butcher. Honestly, we don't produce many rabbits with poor depth anymore, but my daughter's friend raises Rex which often look like pancakes (hers, not all Rex), so maybe we can come up with some measurements and pictures for comparison.

Incidentally, if the rabbit is obese, it gets "chuffy" around the shoulders and ends up looking flat rather than deep - you don't usually see them looking fat in the loin area (at least not visible when the rabbit is alive).

Here are some photos of good depth, and examples of poor depth from rabbits about 5-8 years ago (Sorry I don't have photos of the dressout to go with them.)
