My experience with hand feeding older kits

First time doe had a litter of six. All is going well, then she injured herself. I kept an eye on her, but did not realize she had stopped nursing her kits until I weighed them at three weeks. She had apparently stopped a few days before, and all of the kits had lost weight from their two week...

    Cold weather litter

So, a first time doe kindled early this morning, right when the cold weather hit. She made a nest, and pulled a bit of fur, but did not cover the kits. By the time I found them, all 10 were cold and apparently lifeless. I took them inside, tossed a towel in the dryer, and warmed it up. I...

    Rex color possibilities

I am still trying to get the color thing down, so I need some confirmation please. Buck is blue (dam fawn, sire broken black) and doe is broken tricolor (dam broken black, sire tricolor). What color kits might I see from this? Thanks!

    Tri color rexes

So...I may be joining the Rex crowd. I am wondering, though. If I have a tri colored Rex, what would be the best color to breed it with to get more tri's? A harli, maybe?

    What can I expect?

My old mind freezes when I try to understand color genetics, so I am turning to y'all for help. I have a chin colored doe I would love to keep, but not if I am looking at mostly black kits. So... Grandparents: Chestnut and broken black Red and red Dam: chinchilla...

I got to meet an RTer!

I am late with this, but my hubby and I got to meet EnglishSpot on Saturday. She is just as I imagined from her posts- friendly, warm, outgoing, funny. I only wish we had had more time to talk. She is terrific. ...and oh, I picked up three of her gorgeous NZ reds :) (Hope you enjoyed the...

    I've missed y'all!

What a wild couple of months here. Our internet crashed and has been out for a month and a half. Panic ensued as my husband's daughter is soon going to Nepal as part of a medical mission and email is going to be even more of a necessity. As of tonight, we appear to be back online *fingers...

    Seeking good thoughts/prayers

Let me tell you about a woman I know. She is a marvel. She is strong- passing the state firefighter certification while in her 40s, and then serving as a volunteer firefighter and first responder for years. She is very creative- her gardens have been featured on TV many times (and every bit of...

New way to lose a kit

So, we just had to put down the runt (but not tiny and was doing well) of our almost six week old NZ Reds. I am totally bummed, and confused. I went out to do my late night check, and found her lying...weird on the cage floor. I take a closer look, and she had gotten one of her hind legs stuck...

    What a nice 24 hours

I had home-made carrot cake, phone calls from BOTH of my brothers, I got to plant a few things outside in the garden, eight chicks hatched (yay), and two litters of buns born! One of my better birthdays :) Life is good.

2nd generation of my broken NZ plan

So, here they are at two weeks old (75% NZ, 25% Lionhead): Two broken blacks, a black, two torts, a false Charlie broken tri, and a broken tri. I am thinking to keep the broken tri and maybe one of the blacks, depending on sexes. Mom was a tort NZ, dad a broken black NZ/lionhead cross.

    Don't believe everything you hear

"One to possibly three inches", they said. "It won't last", they said. "It will turn to rain and wash it all away", they said. EIGHTTEEN inches later...and snowing AGAIN this morning! Ready for spring, I am.
