Only if the tort has a recessive on the C- locus like chin, shaded, himi or REW and only if the chinchilla carries self AND non-extension.

Its easiest to breed to a sable point (= aa __ cchl_ __ ee) as you could get 100% sallander (= aa __ cchl_ __ ee) if the sallander parent doesn't carry a recessive on the C-locus

You could also breed to a torted magpie (= aa __ cchd_ __ ej_ OR aa __ cchl_ __ ej_)

I have none of those colors, but I do have a related Harlequin buck and a related Broken with brown and red color (perhaps a broken Harlequin?) Might I get Sallander if I breed to either of those boys? I also have an unrelated red buck.

The harlequins have to be torted so they carry e or they are of no use making a sallander. Someone has to carry chin and both need self. Proper show harlequins are usually not that close to sallanders. They are AACCejej You need the self, "a", gene, recessive c locus including a chin gene, and an"e"where one of the ej are. The rest of the genes I did not include would be the base color of black, blue, chocolate, or lilac. Most people do have some other genes mixed in their harlequins though, many are accidents in breeds with a wide range of colors, so it's possible at least some of the necessary genes are there. Most likely you will have to bring in at least one other rabbit though. Probably the chinchilla gene part.

I am hoping the Harlequin is Torted. He had many many Tortoiseshell brothers and sisters. I think I will breed her to the Harlie buck and see what happens. So, MissM's recipe seems a little complicated.
But I don't think mine would be less so, but for different reasons... I have a tort and I have a chin.
But my chin is a Flemish Giant and my tort is a 2 lb. Holland Lop.
And they are both bucks.

No Sallander for me! So keep sharing pics!

This is a Sallander (the actual breed). Developed in Holland in the 1970s from Thuringers and Chinchillas. This one is from the UK where they're recognised, as well as all of Europe and Scandinavia.

In the UK, this colouring in other breeds has been officially known as Iron Grey for some decades, from before the Sallander breed first arrived.

They really are! Would be a great breed addition for the USA. I've seen photos of some from Scandinavia where they've got the shading really dark, and they're stunning.
