Looking for suggestions of hotels in Longview? Any particular places to stay away from? Last time I was there I camped in a tent but it was in the early spring, not summer.

Depends on what you want in accomodations. I usually stay at a Motel 6 if it's available because they're affordable, normally well-maintained, and they allow me to keep my rabbits in the room. There are also about 4 of them in the Longview area.

Anyone been to Longview and have a particular hotel (if there are 4 motel 6's is a particular one better than the other)to suggest?
Also, anyone going who would be willing to help out a newbie with pointers or just someone I can ask questions of when I am there. Trying to learn. :)

Phil, I'd be happy to help answer questions on what is going on and why when you get there. I'll be the big ugly guy with red satins. Most likely that I will be the only person there with them.

As for the Motel 6 locations, I normally try and stay at the one closest to where the show is being held, but will look and book primarily on the different reviews I find online. Your best bet for getting reviews on what different hotels and motels are like would be going through a site like Expedia, Travelocity, etc. which lists the reviews and star ratings of other travelers who have used them in the past. The ones which have the most consistent compliments are your best bet, while the ones which receive consistent low marks are likely ones you will want to steer clear of.

Also, something which may throw you for a loop when you get there: There is a big arena called the Maude Cobb Center when you roll onto the grounds. That is NOT where they are having the show. It is actually held in the one-story building next to the fairgrounds/rodeo arena which is adjacent (across the street) from the big arena.

I think I might try to go to that show. Not sure yet if I will show any of my Californians, if I did it would probably mean spending 2 nights on the road. I do need a couple of rabbit carriers and a few other supplies.
Thanks, Tommy

Tommy, there's nothing that says you have to enter anything on Friday to be able to show on Saturday. Don't let that hold you back if you have some Cals you want to run across the table.

I have some Jrs. right now that will probably be over 8 pounds by then and I can show them as 6-8's. I will see what they look like the end of next week.

Another question on junior vs pre-junior. If the rabbit is under 3 months but weighs enough to be in the junior category, are they a junior or still a pre-junior due to age? It seems sometimes they look at weight and sometimes age. Which comes first?

I always liked the Pre-Junior class. They called it something else at our shows, but it amounted to the same thing. It really helped new people getting into show rabbits to understand how to interpret the standard. It also helped people be able to cull rabbits for show that them might have kept feeding.

We usually had great judges. They would explain the faults without being hurtful. The worst judges would usually only comment on the good points, which gave the new exhibitor no understanding of what he need to try and breed out of his rabbits. I mean, what is a new exhibitor to think, when the judge tells him that this and that is good, and then places his rabbit 12th?

Well, I've decided not to go to Longview. I'm afraid to leave my buns alone in this heat, there was no interest in the elops I was planning to bring to sale, and my GC 6-8 doe has a broken tooth. So the stars have aligned for me to stay home this time. Maybe next year. Can't wait to hear about it from those who are able to attend! :)

It's certainly understandable. If it weren't for the weather being forecast to be in the high 80's to low 90's for both days here, I would have probably backed out, too. Upper 90's is definitely the "no joy" point.

Yes, I decided not to go. It is just to hot here. It was 98 degrees here at 2 o'clock. I am checking on the rabbits every 1/2 hour. I have a doe in the house right now.

__________ Sun Jun 16, 2013 7:57 am __________

How did the Longview show go? Did it have a good turn out?

The turnout was pretty decent for a summer show in Texas. Not sure of the exact numbers, but it seemed to go fairly well.

Wasn't at all crazy about the heat down there, but I'm just not a summer person any longer.

Had the chance to meet Tracy (philothea) and talk with her a bit. Pretty neat to be able to put a face with some of the names on here.

Actually it is Stacie. :) I get called Tracey alot. It was good to meet you as well. Your rabbits are beautiful. I am really liking the red color rabbits. A close second to my blues.
