The woman I bought her from knows nothing about rabbits, her daughter does 4H and her daughter is the one who bred them. They are mini -rex

Mom looked like a Charlie, all of the litter mates looked like charlies as well, a few had one or two very small, light marks.
Dad was a broken Lilac

She also says that Juniper ( my bun) is a blue broken, her markings around her eyes, nose and ears look darker then blue, and she has a very light lilac spot, smaller then a dime, just above her tail.

I know I need to breed her to a solid, or not at all, but she has the best form of two does.

Are otters "broken"?

Since it was a litter bred broken to broken there is a good chance she may be a "true charlie", carrying two genes for brokens. If you breed her to a solid colored rabbit and she throws only brokens you have a true charlie.

Any color can be "broken". Think of it as "X" color "broken" by white markings.

So the only way to be certain is to breed her, and see what happens.

I more meant, in this regard, I have a chocolate otter, is that fur pattern considered solid or broken if I bred the two together, or should I borrow a friends' solid black buck

Neither. Otter is not a broken or not broken pattern. It exists separately. You can have a broken chocolate otter or a solid chocolate otter just like the self and agouti colors. The only thing you can't see whether you have a broken or not on is white rabbits. Sometimes you can see it on a himi or sable point but it can go unnoticed if there is no white where the point markings are. REW and BEW you can't tell on. As extra complication BEW can make markings that look like a lightly marked broken so the 2 are generally never bred together.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the two tone quality put him as a broken, making it ill-advised to breed the two. She has a good form, better then my broken black, so I would hope to get something useful out of her. I have also been reading that Charlies have dietary issues on occasion so that worries me too.

"Broken" refers to a color "broken" by white. A chocolate otter although it has two colors of fur is not considered broken.

As an example, here are an Opal doe (two fur colors) and a broken Opal kit:

Thanks MSD

I am trying to learn as much as possible, my kids will be doing 4H shortly and we have a few local people to help as well, but for silly questions like this I prefer the forums lol

We have a doe that was sold to us as a "charlie". She has few patches of color and No nose marking. Bred to a solid buck... she always has a couple Solid young in the litter. So she is technically a Broken.

We have another do that is a showable broken. Plenty of color.. complete mustache eye and ear markings. Bred to a Solid buck... she gives only broken young. There for i figure she IS genetically a charlie.

We also have a REW ( ruby eyed white)... that when bred to a Solid buck... give a couple Broken in every litter. So she is genetically a broken White.

The color genetics are a lot of Fun !! Reminds me of Forrest Gump... "Life is like a box of Chocolates".....

Cool!

I currently have a potential charlie, a broken black (both does, they have the same father) and a chocolate otter buck, they are all 4 months old (these are all mini rex).

Then I also have two holland lop torts, a Madagascar tort bred with a broken tort, and a stardard tort bred with another standard tort. But I don't own those males.
