I'm not touching Windows 10.
I've read way too much about it collecting all this data (only some of which has been figured out so far) and sending it back to Microsoft, and the other privacy and control issues.
It tries to push itself onto your machine, and even if you don't want it, various updates will cause 7 and 8.1 to do the same spying on you that 10 does.

If you disable the option to upgrade to 10, there are updates that can keep flipping the option back to "on" so it will keep attempting to upgrade.
They have been trying to scare Windows 7 users into upgrading by telling them they continue to use 7 "'at your own risk, at your own peril' and he revealed Microsoft has concerns about its future software and hardware compatibility, security and more.... And so, as we are pushing our ISV [Independent Software Vendor] and hardware partners to build great new stuff that takes advantage of Windows 10 that obviously makes the old stuff really bad and not to mention viruses and security problems." Oh, really? And on their own website they say that 7 is under Extended Support -- which includes security updates -- until mid-January, 2020. It makes me suspicious.
Here's another good one:
We think every machine that is capable of running Windows 10 we should be doing everything we possibly can to get people to move to Windows 10…We are going to try to find that right balance, but we just know there’s a lot of people out there who constantly kick the can down the street without a little bit more of a, frankly,
a push.
And so, there’s no doubt with a base as big as ours, it is hard to move anyone to a new model without angering some people. We don’t want to anger anybody, but we do feel a responsibility to get people to a much better place, and Windows 10 is a much better place than Windows 7. We will always give you a way out, but we’re trying to
find the right threat balance. (underlining mine)

Sorry, if you've decided you need to threaten people into upgrading, you've just stepped into protection racket territory, as far as I'm concerned. I've got old mobster movies playing in my head: "If you know what's good for you, you'll upgrade, see?"
Nope. I'm finally going to use this disgusting behavior as the motivation I needed to install Linux.
Of course, that doesn't help anybody shop for a computer, but...
