    Nest box alternatives

krevis, that's what I ended up using. She's pushing it all over her cage and rearranging everything but it will work, I think.

    Nest box alternatives

So I have a doe due on Tuesday, in 5 days, and I thought I would order some nest boxes. I'm on a tight budget so shopped around and the cheapest place I found was Bass Equipment, but delivery could take 3 weeks. I have wire cages with annoying small doors, 12" x12" I think and the wooden box I...

    Vent

Oh man, bad rabbit sellers irritate the fire out of me! I never even ask for a deposit to hold a rabbit for someone. If they say they want it I consider it sold and unavailable until they tell me otherwise. She does sound like a scammer and if I had already paid for a rabbit then she said...

    Netherland Dwarf colors

What everyone else said but wanted to add they are so cute! Such tiny ears lol. I had Netherland Dwarf when I first started but they were all psychotic, so I decided never again lol.

    Multiple Rabbit Discounts

Oh my gosh...people like that make me irritated. Once you make a deal with someone, to me, that's a done deal. No need to try getting the price lower. I have a closed rabbitry. Nobody goes in the barn except for me, hubby, and friends, and family. But way back when we first started with rabbits...

    A stubborn doe

I would never leave her in his cage unattended. They could fight and does can injure a buck to the point he can't breed anymore. Plus, if they are spending too much time together he's going to lose interest. I would wait a week, then put her in with him and if she's not lifting, then assist her...

    Multiple Rabbit Discounts

If someone buys 3 or more from me I generally take $10 off for a discount, more if it's the FFA/Agri teacher for a school, 4H, etc.

To pedigree or not to pedigree...

For me, I will buy a pedigreed rabbit over a non pedigreed rabbit if it's a breed I'm raising to show or better the breed. For meat producers I don't care if it's pedigreed or even purebred. When I sell babies, if it comes from pedigreed stock it will always come with a pedigree at no extra...

    Record keeping method

I use Hutch/Everbreed and it's not free but not too expensive and you get reminders about when to add the nest box, due dates, etc and if you pay a little more you can get access to the financial tracker too but I just use an excel spreadsheet for that. With hutch you can also keep track of...

How much do your rabbits like hay?

Mine seem to eat more hay in the colder weather and then in warmer weather they waste it so normally in spring, summer, and fall they get grass and weeds and just hay in winter.

    Weaning

I typically separate kits from mom at 4 weeks but have had to leave them in until 6 weeks. I have found that the ones weaned a little earlier grow a bit faster, gain more, than those left with mom and littermates longer. If the doe starts getting annoyed I will remove the kits and let her have a...

    Breeding for temperament

I will not keep any rabbit who tries to bite, lunges at my hand if I stick it in the cage, etc. Does who kill their babies get two chances then they are gone. If I can't easily handle a rabbit without getting slashed, kicked, bit, etc they don't hang around. The Champagne d'Argents I had were...

What do you use for ear marking? EDITTED

Well, I have always just used the battery operated tattoo pens and they work really well for me. I have heard of the ears being torn by the clamp style if they jerk. Can I ask why you don't want to use a pen?

Pellet round up for breeders (not meat)

I'm located in northeast Arkansas and use a 17% alfalfa based pellet made by Hirsch Feed in Thayer, MO. The pellets are always fresh smelling, green, and I use it for all my rabbits. I never had an issue with rabbits not eating it before and it's cheaper than anything from Orschelns or TSC. I...

    Regular Hay

If you feed pellets they are usually alfalfa based so you don't want to feed alfalfa hay. Bermuda, timothy, orchard, etc are all good hay choices. With fescue hay if it contains a certain fungus I know in horses and cattle that are pregnant it causes issues, not sure if it affects rabbits the...

    Other feed options

You could try just forage. I know some will grow their own fodder or just pick grass and weeds. There may be a cheaper feed out there too. What kind are you currently feeding?

    Dumor Wire Cages

When we got our rabbits last weekend we were scrambling to get cages. I'm unable to lift anything, bend, etc for another few weeks and we didn't have the money to buy lumber and build hutches like we normally would have. TSC had Dumor wire cages so we ended up getting 2 24x24 for the bucks and 2...

    Hello from Arkansas!

Hey everyone I'm Amanda from northeast Arkansas. Me and my husband are trying to start up a rabbitry again. Right now we have pedigreed Rex and are looking for a few more, plus Flemish Giants, New Zealand, Giant Chinchillas (maybe) and Continental Giants. We want to breed for meat, pets, and...
