    Rabbit breeds for meat

Get a local breed that can handle your climate. Rabbits and heat are not a really good combo. And long travel times create their own challenges. Maybe the local vet knows someone who raises rabbits?

    Inbreeding Question

If you want to find out if there are recessive genes that can cause problems, test breeding (so once and whole litter for the freezer) so close will likely tell you. If you want to breed this close because you can't get other breeding stock and want to continue this way you'll breed yourself...

What is the most popular breed to be raised for meat?

I understand standard as a size designation just like dwarf is.

Is this a dwarf gene problem ( peanut)?

First impression from the foto enlarged : they look wrinkly to me so not fed?

Small breeds, dwarf gene? Genetic issues.

I raise a small rex breed, here known as dwarf rex. Mine average out to about 1600-1700 grams i.e. 4 pounds. No peanuts as yet and i doubt i'll get them. One doe is cross with mini rex (5-6 pounds breed weight roughly) and small dwarf buck others are at the upper limit for the breed standard...

Can you tell what color this charlie is?

I have had a false charlie with few markings, but that one did have some spots on the back. From what i see there is no spots on the body, just color on ears and nose? Wonder if he really is broken?

    Anybody feed JUST pellets?

Pellets as in bunny feed pellets only are the fastest way to an obese, fat rabbit. Bunny pellet i.e. concentrates are an about 10-15 grams/kilo ration, comes out at 1 level 2 tbs scoop per rabbit per day for mine. I do feed a variety of pelleted feeds, but that is gras and hay pellet from...

    Meat pen rabbit injury

Had kit with big cut on the back once, covered it with alu spray (silvery stuff that acts like a bandagespray). Couldn´t find a scar or anything when the hair had grown back. Ditto for another one with cut on belly near hindleg. If it is clean it will heal from the things i have seen, but few...

What is the most popular breed to be raised for meat?

Depends on where you live, some do better in heat then most. And otherwise what is available locally, what do you need amounts wise, what is the size of your household, what size animal can you handle easily, what do you want them for other then meat? Wool?, Fur? Pets? So rather then going with...

    Rabbit proof floor in colony

Keep in mind that breeding broken to broken means you'll end up with 25% chance of homozygote broken (i.e. broken gene form both parents) also known as a "charlie" and that can/will go together with a genetic condition known as megacolon that will kill them. It is why i don't want broken...

    How did lynx happen

Have such a puzzle here myself now. blue otter X blue carrying black self. Expected blue and black, but the 2 blue otters are a light and a dark blue and the black otter kit is not black when compared to the two black selfs. Now 3 weeks old and fur colors keep shifting or the light just confuses...

    Rabbit proof floor in colony

Build cages to be flexible i.e. can split them or use as a double makes moving animals around for say if they don't like their neighbours way easier. And in many ways bigger works better, so if you have the room build as wide as you can structural wise, but only about 60cm/2 feet deep due to...

    What age to dispatch?

Bucks about 10-11 weeks if not kept as breeding stock. Does can go a fair bit longer if they can stay with mom, may be for breeding or if i want the fur. Most are about 1 pound when packed for the freezer (rex dwarf) to 2 pounds for older does. Freezer is small and if i can fill that with...

Brand new Babies, should i move them?

Had a doe make a nest just in front of the box, transferred the kits into the box and doe was fine with the relocation. Other doe started one beside the box about a week before duedate, so i removed that and moved the box so back half was that spot. She made her nest in it textbook. With a...

    Was given a mess

Shorter days can make does not want to breed, they may still be recovering or now fat. Try again mid february. Do you have any data at all on these animals? Cage cards, other papers? Or was it just i have to get rid of all my rabbits, here you go and bye?

Is there rigor after thawing when the meat was frozen fresh?

Mine go into the freezer immediately or into the pressure cooker and then pot or freezer. From freezer into pressure cooker ... So i don't know about rigor, it doesn't have time for that.

Honey crock pot rabbit with rice.

I tend to cook my rabbits in the pressurecooker to debone easily and then add the meat to a sauce. Should work with this to i think. Maybe put sauce in oven with onions and mushrooms and add meat later? Mmmm. need to try that this week or some such. Need a new new years dish as hot rabbit has my...

    Did I discover something new?

Vinegar breaks down calcium, and bugs & friends don't like it. So rather then bleach to clean urine build up with, should save on scrubbing.

    Did I discover something new?

For outdoor hutches i wouldn't want them to be the only thing between bunny and anything curious/hungry. I can get something like this here that can handle weight, no-cut to size restingboard like pattern. But i will have droppans under them so something pushing them up for instance won't be a...

    Help pricing rabbit manure?

If you can grow bunny food on that manure you also would get that, right along with the free veg for your own table since you don't have to buy that anymore either. Close the circle via feeding things from your own place rather than buying in. But also calculate total in and out rather then just...
