Agreed, there are an amazing array of colors that are out there, but not acceptable for registration or show.

    Is this a chestnut

Fascinating. What color are yours as newborns? All of our chestnuts are born black, and develop the lighter color in a few weeks. Could you do me a huge favor and snip a little sample of the hair from one of your chestnuts, and take a close up picture of the hair shaft? I'd love to see how the...

    Baby colors REW?

I do see where there is some color near the eye of one rabbit, and an odd dark 'caret' over the nose on the other. There seems to be a genetic component in the shape and quality of markings. Some have said that rabbits that also carry the recessive gene for albino white do not have as good of...

    Baby colors REW?

REW is short for red (or ruby) eyed white, the albino white

    Is this a chestnut

Chestnuts are a black agouti, they are born black, with the white inner ears able to be seen even as newborns in the nestbox. By day 3, you'll see a jet black kit with white inner ears that really stand out. By 1-2 weeks of age, the banding in the hair will be visible. Note that the kit on the...

    Angora photo request

I agree, the face color is too dense for ermine. This is a Himalayan pointed white (left) compared to ermine (right): The ermine tipping isn't as dark as your rabbit's nose, and the coat is much lighter, a pearl white. When I look at your photos, I was wondering about the color near the face...

It's a new day, new kits, new colours coming.

Personally, I like to compare newborn, 3 day, and then again when their eyes open at 10 days. By the third day, the hair emerges, and it tells a lot about the color. By 10 days, the eyes are open, so eye color becomes another clue; and the agouti patterning becomes visible, yet another clue.

Will be interesting to see, can you send a closeup that shows the eyes as well as the color on the nose?

Sounds like an ermine, does it have chinchilla in its background? I'd love to see photos!

    Baby colors REW?

Knowing the newborn color helps in determining final color, as the babies can change so much as they grow. "Pink" babies can be red-eyed-white or blue-eyed-white albinos, Himalayan (aka Californian or pointed white), ermine, pearl, or the lighter yellowish toned colors like cream, fawn...

    cchl vs cchd?

You've chosen a black pearl as your example, and it's the one that you can see the difference. In the chinchilla example, chin c(chd) doesn't affect the black color, so the face is a true black color. But sable c(chl) reduces the intensity of the black, turning it sepia. So the sable pearl has a...

    2 does smashes litters

Rodents can easily get through 3/4" holes, which is a real problem when we use 1" x 2" or 1" x 1" mesh sides to our cages. I agree that the stomping is probably a sign of rodents in the area, and it is heartbreaking when it happens. If you are thinking of recovering your pens with hardware...

    Close-up hair photos for banding/ticking

Okay, so she's the broken. She also has white on the ears, and the dark nose is smaller than it should be. Himis should have dark feet, dark ears, and dark at the nose. The white feet are classic for brokens. Yes, that's what happens when the chin gene is recessive to normal color, C c(chd)...

What color is this Angora rabbit?

If you have a blue tort kit out of him, he has to be ee non-extension, and dd dilute, which we'd already guessed anyway. Chinchilla or sable plus non-extension with non-agouti self makes pearl. But chinchilla/sable plus non-extension plus agouti makes ermine. The non-extension with agouti makes...

What color is this Angora rabbit?

Your rabbit is lovely! A blue tortoiseshell would have creamy fiber; blue face, ears, feet and tail, usually with grayish eyes. A black tortoiseshell has brighter yellow fiber, brownish black points, with brown eyes. Both have normal color C_ with non-extension (the fawn gene) ee. Pearls are...

We have had bunnies successfully survive these injuries, they are amazingly resilient.

    Close-up hair photos for banding/ticking

That's a lot of yellow tones for a chinchilla, it will be interesting to see how it matures. Do you have a photo of the Himi doe? Does she have white on her front toes, or are they all dark? What about the nose, any white? 'Booted' brokens have less than 10% white, often just a little white on...

    Close-up hair photos for banding/ticking

Solid to solid (en en) gives only solid. Charlie to solid gives only En en brokens, this is the genetic for 'proper' brokens, and the entire litter would be broken. Broken (En en) to solid should average half broken and half solid (although when Lady Luck gets involved, the actual ratio in any...

    Close-up hair photos for banding/ticking

Sorry, I explained that poorly. Two Dd can certainly make a dilute--using the Punnet square you'd get 1/4 DD dense, 1/4 dd dilute, and the other half Dd dense but dilute carriers.

Not breeding the brokens together not only improves the color ratio, but it helps to avoid a problem that can occur with EnEn Charlies, called megacolon, where the digestive system gets messed up.
