Cleaning occupied nest box, and other questions

If you don't have drainage holes in your nest box, a puppy training pad, folded to the proper size, works well to absorb the extra moisture and keep the box dry. I usually put one in when I check the newborn litter, as sometimes mom will destroy it if she likes to dig in the box while building...

    Fodder growing too slowly?

I grow wheat fodder in my basement. Its about 55F down there this time of year. A CFL bulb gives it all the light it needs. I use cleaned wheat, and haven't had any issues with mold even though I only water once a day. Its usually the right height on day 8. I soak mine for 24 hours, and I don't...

    Nose Bite

A dab on New Skin (basically super glue) may help. That's what my vet suggested when my dog cut her nose. It worked.

    My Rex Doe

Oh, I'm so sorry. :( Do you have any idea why she died? I would make sure everything she touched is well sanitzed, just in case it was an illness. You don't want your new buns picking up anything your old ones may have had.

    meat rabbit start up questions

Once my girls reach breeding age, they get seperate cages. Wire dividers will allow them to have their own space, but they can still interact with their neighbor if they chose. Mine never seemed to want to. My old hutch was 4x8, with private wooden nest boxes in the back and wire dividing the...

    What feed do you use?

I feed Heim's 18%. After tax, its $18.20/50lbs. I also sprout wheat fodder, which I get for $19/50lbs at a mill 50 miles away. During the winter when its cold (-31 this morning) the fodder is nice because they get a lot of water from it. Even using hot water, their crocks are frozen within an...

    The just about killed me!

I knew I wasn't imagining things! I keep saying the bucks in a litter are the hardest to skin, but no one in my family believes me. None of them were willing to skin one to see what I was talking about, of couse.

    German Shepherd (ish?) pups...

For Sure a GSD mix of some sort. The black and tan has the same colorings as my youngest GSD, but she had the coat of the sable. She is a long coated Shepherd. In her litter, 2 werelong coat, and 3 were standard. Cute pups. They should have no problem finding a home, but I would still like to...

    weather

-27 this morning. First real cold snap we've had all year, and the buns all gave me a dirty look this morning, as if it was MY fault. Most of December was in the high 20s, low 30s, which sure does make winter seem a lot shorter.

What's wrong with that fox? (Graphic!)

My guess would be mange. We get Timber Wolves around here from time to time that look like that. I'm not sure if a fox could transmit mange to a dog, but I wouldn't take any chances. If you have some kind of animal control in your area, I suggest asking if they could trap the fox and remove it...

    outdoor rabbits and cold temps

I used to have a 4 hole hutch. The top was wood, with wire for the sides and bottom. The outside wall on each side had plywood that came out about 24 inches before turning into wire. Wire was the only thing seperating the rabbits from each other, except in the back. The back of each hole had a...

    New to feeding RAW

Both of my dogs (GSDs) are fed raw. Works pretty well for the most part, but introduce new foods slowly. I started mine on chicken quarters. They love venison, pork, canned mackral, eggs, and organ meats too. Rabbit tends to plug them up, and if they have too much liver, they could shoot a goose...

    Pics of the babies! :)

A couple of my does wean at 6 weeks, but I have one right now who is still nursing them at 8 weeks. Hilarious to watch. She is a first time accidental mom ( mis sexed one of her brothers and he got ahold of her in the grow out pen at 14 weeks) but I think I will keep her since she's doing such a...

Has anyone experienced this fodder problem?

I have my setup in the basement and its about 60F down there. Even in the middle of the summer, its rare for the basement to get over 70, but then again, we only get a couple of days all year that hit 90. I use warm water to rinse my fodder since the air temp is so cool. I haven't experienced it...

Has anyone experienced this fodder problem?

I do a mix of wheat and barley, but I started off with all wheat. I have found that the wheat has a better germination rate, but it is also more expensive. I mix the two to save a small amount of money, but also so the rabbits are used to both in case I can only get one or the other for some...

    Should I be Concerned?

Sorry  I would give her a couple days, and then rebreed her if it was a litter of normal kits. If the kit was over sized, she might need a few more days to recover.

    Hip Displaisia ??

I have 2 German Shepherds. The older one has great hips, but the younger one doesn't. They are from the same breeder/blood line. We found out about the younger one's hips when we had them x-rayed to determine if she was suitable for breeding. She was showing no signs of pain ( she is very high...

    Extreme cold what to do?

Don't worry about the cold, but find some way to block the wind. My setup last year was a 4 hole hutch with enclosed next boxes in the back and they were fine all winter. I would keep the boxes full of fresh straw so the rabbits had the option of warm(er) shelter. Not that the little buggers...
