My wife andI are venturing into rabbitry for meat rabbbits. I want to build my own cages but the only place near us to get the wire for them is TSC which is expensive. Are there any mail order places or other suggestions for a source of cage material?

If you ultimately decide to try and buy it locally, go to a hardware store and stay away from the Chinese-made stuff. The latter is cheap, and will ultimately cost you much more to use and will cause much more headaches and aggravation in replacements.

Try and use 14-gauge wire on the flooring and sides as much as possible, and go with the galvanized after weld (GAW) wire. Much more sturdy, durable and rust resistant. Don't get cheap tools (cutters, j-clip pliers), either. Your hands and wrists will thank you for it later on.

Also, they will normally pre-cut the wire segments for you, which again will save you alot in the areas of time, aggravation, and sore hands.

I totally agree with SatinsRule. Don't get the wire from TSC, it is cheap and won't last. You want 14g GAW wire, 1/2" x 1" for the floor and 1" x 2" for the sides and top. Klubertanz.com or Bassequipment.com are good places to get wire. Depending on where you live, there may be feed stores that carry the wire or make the cages even. You can also look on Craigslist and other online places for used cages. Don't skimp on quality on your cages. It is worth the extra money to get good ones that will last a long time, rather than junk that will need to be replaced in a year.

We got our wire from a local hardware. We just made sure that it won't be harmful and something with somewhat rounded ends.
