Whatcha doin' with those buns?

Just curious who does what with their rabbits. Do you have pets? Breed and raise pets? Meat rabbits? Raise just for show? Breed and sell for show? What's your primary purpose in raising rabbits?

My rabbits are primarily for meat for my dogs, second for show and last my pets. I almost never sell anything, I don't have a high enough output to satisfy what I need here yet.

I voted "meat", but like Skysthelimt's, mine are multi-purpose. Meat for my family and animals, show, and fur.

I guess I can't consider them "pets" because you bury a "pet" when it dies. You don't eat it.

All the same, I love my rabbits very much, and I believe they are cared for better than most "pets".

when i raise rabbits for meat when i was a kid, they were also my pets, when mom sent me out to the freezer to get a rabbit for dinner,,i would write a name on the package. Mom cooked rabbit for dinner ,but she never would eat it

Breeder does and bucks are pets here, too. At least our original 5. We've told our kids that that isn't the case for any new ones, including Yuki. I'm not sure how far we'll actually get with that. :?

I picked "other" since I use mine for meat, and I breed for show and to sell to those that breed for meat and show.

I will mention that I intend to use my rabbits for meat although I don't have any yet. I'll hopefully be getting some next week, I'm so excited. :happy:

Their main purpose is wool, but I intend to send some extras to freezer camp eventually. Maybe.

I also use mine for meat and pets. But I don't use them for dog food cause i'm affraid they will try to get in my shed for more meat. The i can't say what will happen to my dogs if they killed my rabbits!!

there needs to be more than one option..... as sometimes folks have more than one reason to have rabbits. Most of mine go as pets, but I show one breed, I sell others for meat consumption and such like.

My dogs are in the bunny shed with me every time I go in. the cages are open and they stick their heads in, lick the bunnies, and often drink out their water crocks (yuck). They've cornered bunnies that hope out, herded bunnies back into the cage, held bunnies down with their paws. They have yet to kill one. I think a lot of it is being alpha. The alpha decides who eats what, when and how much.

Likewise, I keep rabbits for multiple reasons. I chose "MEAT" because that is my most important reason...but I also plan to do some showing in the not-too-distant future and I also will someday keep rabbits for fibre arts.

Mine are mainly meat. Sell meat breeders, pets only to those who get them fast and don't diddle daddle about it. My breeders are treated as pets, kits are also treated as beloved pets, except they get sold/eaten in the end.

Steak is an albino and Potatoes is a himi ... in this litter as I also "recycle" names :lol:<br /><br />__________ Sat Jun 02, 2012 11:49 pm __________<br /><br />I also chose "meat" as that is where most of the litters are *supposed* to go ... so far, I have only butchered one litter as the other two were sold at 8 weeks and 3 of the current 3-week old litter are already spoken for and another 2 possibly :lol:

I also have fiber bunnies and plan to show them and the Silver Fox I will be breeding after October Convention.
