Heh, I mentioned to hubby that I thought we still had a medicine dropper around from when the cat, Havok, was on amoxicillin - and Havok crawled out of the shipping box the cats have been playing in all day, like "what, you got another cool toy? I heard my name"!

We just had to replace the pressure tank on our well, and my son Colliepup is playing in the box right now! Shipping boxes aren't just for kitties, you know!

Just don't let him play zookeeper with his little sister if he has one . . . Ok, yeah, the story: when I was about 7 and my brother 9 or 10, my dad worked for Picker X-Ray, and those boxes were both large and double-walled, so sturdy! My brother decided I was the exotic animal his zoo needed, so loaded me into it, then hefted the whole thing onto his wagon and raced around the backyard until we hit a tree root . . . flying inside a box feels interesting, until you hit the ground upside down and break your collarbone!

__________ Thu Sep 06, 2012 9:49 am __________

Well, she's still hopping and eating. I can't decide if the spot looks better (less raw) or worse (puffier). The "red dot" has completely disappeared, so it must not be a bot fly - in fact I may have had the nasty little answer in her feed bowl this morning, a @!~/! cockroach! I'd had to run them out of Patches' feed a time or 2, but he was closest to the wall, and easier access. Never saw any in the other cages until this morning, but they DO bite sometimes, and are nasty nasty nasty - can you tell I hate roaches? Moving the cages today, and cleaning!

Is there any chance, that it is a small bot fly?

I thought about that too, but that and fly strike are the most horrible things I can think of, and I didn't want to think any further.

That makes two of us! The sad thing is, when you're working backwards, the nastiest diseases are what come up first, and then scare you so bad it's hard to look further. And I thought I had become toughened enough to view these rabbits as "hobby that could become a business", since my early experiences with rabbits had left me thinking of them like goldfish. "Oh, one died, sad". But they all have personalities, and I have become very fond of my bunnehs, especially little Schatzi. I feel like one of my kids is sick, and no one can tell me why.

__________ Sat Sep 08, 2012 8:00 pm __________

Well, the lump is slowly shrinking. I crushed a Benadryl and mixed it with an ounce or 2 of water, and got about 1/4 to half of it in her - once on Thursday and again this afternoon; plus I kept slathering triple antibiotic ointment over the bare spot and surrounding fur. She is lively and eating well, so I have hopes of a permanent cure.

I hope it goes away, completely!

I think tonight is the turning point on this. We got her out to administer her dose of meds (I was dosing her every other day, though the last couple of times, the ointment seemed to be just coating her fur, no more obvious entry point), and I don't know if it happened because she struggled more than usual, or if she struggled because for once, she was in pain, but I saw what at first I took to be like rabies foam coming out her mouth, and almost panicked, until hubby finally got her still and brought her to me. It was that pasty pus the photos show, and basically the infected bit had popped somewhere near her lip. So I wrapped her in a towel, and put antibiotic on a paper towel, and then started pressing down, and mashed a good half ounce of that stuff out. When it looked like no more was coming out, I slathered more ointment all over that side of her face, which now looks more the same size as the other side. Poor thing has made no noises other than mild grunting when I was mashing the gunk out, no attempt to bite me or my husband - I do hope she is now going to mend, she's been so patient with my half-a**ed doctoring!

__________ Wed Sep 19, 2012 6:50 pm __________

Wrapping her in a towel seems to make her feel safe though, not only did she stay quiet while I doctored her, she stayed cuddled in my lap afterwards and peed on me, LOL.
