I'm thinking about showing my Mini Rex's. I need some questions answered please

1) What is the average entrance fee?
2) What is the average prize pot?
3) What should I feed my Mini rex's to get them in good condition?
4) I only have 2 showable rabbits. Can I just show the 2, or do I have to have more than that?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated

Around $3, usually, and most of the time there are at two or more shows per event. The Monterey show was a triple... if I recall correctly, entry fees were $6 for one show, $10 for two, or $12 for all three.

There isn't one. You will get a ribbon or a trophy. Some breeds have such low numbers that they don't even get that.

My show animals just get their normal pellets with an occasional bit of grain.

You can just enter the two, but eventually they will "age out" of being competitive. I don't show any of my rabbits past about eight months old.

They're both over a year. Should I just keep a show quality kit from their next litter (there's 1 buck kit, but I don't really want to keep him as I dont have room, and we want to do a colony type thing) and just show him/her?

__________ Sat Aug 02, 2014 8:19 am __________

Oh any why do people show rabbits if theres no prize pot?

You could enter them just to get an idea of their quality, but you will likely do better showing their offspring.

Aside from the joy of competition and having good quality animals, if you have winning rabbits you can sell your stock for more money. :greedy:

I show because I really enjoy the challenge of "building" a better rabbit. Seeing your herd improve because of the choices you made about breeding is just so exciting, regardless of the ribbons. Eventually, the ribbons will come if you make the right choices. But it is enough for me to imagine what two rabbits will produce, and then seeing great results. It's just fun!

Really I do it for fun, cause everyone has some kind of hobby, like woodworking, fishing and some more deplorable ones, that drain money and are only for the persons enjoyment :)

I like the camaraderie, it's a way to interact with people of like mindedness.

I love studying peds, choosing breeding partners, raising babies and then taking them for a bunch of people to admire and drool over, and I like drooling over other peoples rabbits.

And it does help sell bunnies.

__________ Sat Aug 02, 2014 6:44 pm __________

And it's cheaper than showing dogs, which by the way, have no prize pot either, unless you are wayyyy up there in standings.

There are a number of reasons why breeders go to local shows.

Most do it for the enjoyment of being around and competing with other breeders.

Many do it because they're amassing points in national specialty club sweepstakes contests.

Some of us are very much into the competitive aspects of it and want to know what our rabbits look like compared to those being shown by other competitive breeders, as well as what a cross section of judges are looking for.

About the only shows where there are any kind of payouts are at fairs.

Of course, it's always fun to run into other RT posters. I've run into several in just over a year's period of time.

I show for several reason, it's a fairly large portion of my social life, I get outside opinions on my stock, I get to see what the other breeders in the area are doing, I sometimes find new stock, and most importantly it's fun

Cool :) I might start showing. I probably won't show the ones I have now, but since I'm not going to breed Mini Lops anymore because my Liv died, I'm going to sell my buck and I'll probably keep a SQ kit from the next litter and show it, and then when we do our colony, then I want to get a few Hollands, because I still want lops, but I don't want to do Mini's without Liv

That's a good point. Other than church, I have no social life, so this is how I "get out."
