What color is this??

[White's family farm]

Just purchased a chinchilla(?) Buck from a blue mom (carries chin) and white Dad (no idea what's under that).

I'm not sure if he had the chin gene or what exactly he is. He looks kinda brown, but I'm thinking he might be a dilute agouti or chin.

Any ideas?

looks like a gray heavy castor (I'm sure there's a proper term for that)

Normal black chinchilla, he's just got a dead/or/molting/sunburned/pee stained/oxidized coat. It turns the hairs brown like this and he should look nice and crisp after he molts into a fresh pelt

He was in a cage that got sun, so that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the help!

Oxidized pelts sure can change coat colors! My blue self Belgian "yard rabbit" turns "chocolate" from;
A. Running around in the sun and
B. Being a gross buck who pees on himself

Pictured is the dirty scoundrel, you can see the fresh coat growing in on his back and the brown molting out.



So anytime you're trying to determine true coat color, look for where the rabbit has already molted, usually the face and ears, then the top of the back.

Just takes time but you got this.
