We have a buck we were told was a smoke pearl but when I posed on here it seems the consensus is tort/otter.

So if that's the case....what color? Lilac? Is there such a thing as a fawn fox?

Also, I was told if I bred him to an otter that would hide the tort but not the other way around. True?

I'd say a blue tort otter, so you could call him a martenized smoke Pearl

As long as the otter, or marten, doesn't have a non-extension / tort gene then you should only get otters or martens but all the kits will carry the tort gene and could produce fox if bred to another carrier

If bred to a tort you could get 50% to 100% fox :( (assuming there are no other recessives)

Does it matter/help with identification to know that pretty much the entire pedigree for this guy is Siamese sable/smoke pearl/sable point?

Only that the breeder is likely writing the wrong colour on his/her pedigrees ;)

One of his parents must be a otter, marten or fox to produce this kit. If there were any chestnuts or chinchilla in his pedigree then the tan gene can hide but not with a pedigree of Siamese sables, smoke pearls and sable points :(

depending on the knowledge of the breeder I could see this as being a honest mistake. They might not know what to look for in martinized rabbits. I didn't for a long time until someone pointed it out to me.. the different in the ear colour matters. It was like REALLY? I just thought it was a one off. Just like with steel sometimes showing up funny.

One does the best one can.. but I've had people sell me "siamese sable" rabbits that were really seals and vice versa. youngters that come to me "orange" rabbits but are really black japanese if you look closely. Breeder error happens, and often it's just lack of knowledge. :)

It's not a really big deal honestly. He's pretty and for pet stock he'll make some nice colors. I was hoping he might be lilac and I'd have a shot using him as a buck to my chocolate and lilac does. We would like to get into chocolate colors but so far we can't find bucks anywhere.

 Breed a son back to his chocolate or lilac mother
That's the plan. Does are due this week
But I was hoping to avoid the 5-6 month delay for grow out ;)

there are chocolate bucks to be found in the London-Chatham area. I have a nice one in my barn, a solid chocolate growing up (buck) and some chocolate carriers :)

The genotype with the 5 basic colour genes would be

at_ B_ cchl_ dd ee

considering his pedigree I can make a guess of what some of the blanks would be

ata BB cchlcchl dd ee
