My several years old rabbits no longer have very soft and silky fur. Don't know if it's due to old age or if it's due to feeding them 50% green vegetables, fruits, and sweet potatoes along with pellets. When I give them losts of greens they don't finish their pellets.

Also if rabbits don't have thick winter coats, is it most likely due to genetics?

No idea about age or coat changes...how old is "old?" My three-year-old, coming four-year-old buck seemed to really impress a judge with his coat so IDK. I only feed pellets and alfalfa cubes.

As to winter coat...my rabbits don't seem to have extra thick coats and they seem just fine in very cold temperatures. I make sure to feed BOSS in winter though, for a little extra fat for them to burn. :) I don't know if domestic rabbit coats get much thicker in winter at all come to think of it...

Some breeds do lose their prime after a year or so, some age with grace, just like people.

rabbits in the wild won't eat 50% fruits or vegetables and are mostly surface grazers. I'd cut back on the fruits and veggies and add some hay and try to up the consumption of the feed. boss can help with coat condition, seed kind of food that is a bit more natural than fruits and veggies
