Hello all,

I bought this doe from a local farmer (who also raises exotic birds). Her cage mates were either albinos or agoutis like her. It seemed to me that most of them were related. She is around six pounds right now, but I believe she will grow to around nine or ten pounds as she has kindled two litters by a Californian buck without any problems. Any guess on the breed(s) in question here?

Realizing this picture isn't the best, I can upload a better one on request.

My thoughts as well, Sagebrush. I'll get a better picture... Maybe a profile shot?

The seller had no info on her age, but my best guess is six to eight months old. We bought her two months ago. She was about 60% the size of her fully grown cage mates, who were all in the 8-10 lb. range. She came pregnant and completely bombed the first litter, but has since proven to be a supermom.

Not knowing a ton about rabbit breeds, I also noticed her spine is very easily felt when petting her... But is that a clue into breed, or age or nutrition?

A profile shot might be a great idea, would give some of the others who know rabbits better then I do to identify her easier. As for being able to feel the spine, if it is soft bumps then she is in a healthy weight. If they are sharp and distinct then she is very under weight. As far as I know it is not a good indication of age OR breed.
As far as the pic, if you have something that can show scale (size) would also help. (ie: a soda can sitting next to her.)

If you blow into the Rabbits fur, do you see rings of color?
What colors are they? I am thinking, possibly some type
of Chin. Or other Agouti.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

From outside to inside, I see: Cream tip, narrow black band, wide red band, wide blue/gray band.

If I"ve gathered the information correctly
so she's 6-8 months.
weighs 6 lbs now.
has had kits.
spine is easily felt.

I wouldn't be surprised if either she is a runt, or stunted.
She may not get any bigger.
she may be on the thin end of the scale.. are they pointy or just easily felt when you run a hand down her back?

Figuring out breed on a basic chestnut rabbit is rather difficult.
She is most likely a mutt of some sort. :)

If she works for your herd, enjoy her. :)

Here she is moments before her bath with my daughter excited to start.

It's like you said, Ladysown. Chestnuts are hard to figure out, and she may just be a Heinz 57. :)

Her spine has gotten less pronounced... She easily eats her weight in feed every day, although I haven't seen much growth in the last two months. She's about the size of a regulation NFL football.

If this profile gives anyone a hint into her geneology, I'm still all ears. She is great for our herd... the kids love her. :D
