I've got a little blue eyed white phenotype buck. NO signs of color coming out anywhere... He's two months old. I thought if there was a chance he's a very light pearl, he'd be dilute. But I'm pretty sure his sire doesn't carry dilute.

Tell me how this works, please...

I have seen a couple tiny white spots on some self offspring from another litter of his dam's.

Wouldn't I have seen more signs of the vienna gene in the parents.

Am I right in assuming the parents each need to carry just one v for this to happen? Can they carry just one v and hide it well enough?

I'm dying to know... I may keep this guy to do a test breeding and rule out pearl or ermine, which is the only this he could be.... but NO COLOR at all, yet and all the other pearls (from other litters I've had) have SOME color, even the dilutes, though this guy should be full color.

I'll get pictures up soon.

Thanks!!

His eyes look blueish green
Thanks... What could that mean for his genotype... I'm just thinking of what rabbit could possibly have blue eyes, all white fur, no other color what-so-ever... The blue is the same color blue as my pearls... blue gray, I guess. The white is exactly as white and void of color as my REWs...

I should add that the hoop barn we are in changes the light a little... Looking back at the photos, there's a cast of yellow, which could make his eyes look a bit green for the photo...

I agree that the eyes are not quite right for BEW

You are correct that both parents must carry the gene and it can hide for many generations in Vienna carries

In my experience the chinchilla/dark shaded based frosty/ermine are whiter than the sable/light shaded and blue or lilac ermine are even lighter.

I appreciate your input. Not a speck of color, though... And, I've got plenty of pearls out of the sire and every one of them show color.

Would breeding him to a doe to rule out pearl/ermine give me an answer? He could only be that, right?

The blue really is blue "in person" I can see these photos don't look much like that.

I'd love for someone to share that they've had a perfectly white pearl that stayed that way past 2 months.... hmmm. Well, thanks everyone! It looks like I'll need to breed to find out.

I'll post what I discover (next year, likely..).

Hello I'm delurking to say that i've had this exact same issue. But genetically my ermines with bluish eyes were just that. After test breeding it became apparent. At least in the one that I had held on to. She replecated herself and torts and blues when bred back to her sire. She did develop a few frosty hairs on the bridge of her nose at the age of two however.

__________ Mon Jul 21, 2014 5:26 pm __________

Hello I'm delurking to say that i've had this exact same issue. On that note i know that my mutts have flemish stock on both the dam and sires sides. I dont think you were directing that to me but

WOW!

$200 bucks for an unshowable Flemmish Giant!

I'm not sure who their market is on that one. They seem awfully proud of them though, and aren't really interested in selling them unless it's to someone who REALLY wants one.

I say ermine. I have plenty of ermines that turn out without a speck of color in my French angora herd, but with those beautiful blue grey or brown eyes. They're unshowable of course, but since I sell them at fiber rabbit price I get plenty of people interested in them since they produce the white wool without the red eyes that everyone finds so creepy.
