We've been raising rabbits for 3 years now. About a month ago, our neighbor came over and told us there was a bunny loose. We went and checked and it wasn't one of ours. We've seen it here and there, but today we were able to catch her. She was definitely somebody's pet. She has no problem being handled. Nobody seems to be missing a rabbit though. It's very possible it is one that was just let go.

I have two questions. First, her vent appears swollen. Not just the normal color change, but swollen. I don't see any discharge or pus or anything. This is not something we have dealt with before, so I am in chartered territory.

The other question is how long do we need to quarantine her and how far away do we need to keep her from our other rabbits (we haven't brought in any new stock before)? Eyes are clear. Ears are clear. She is skinny, but otherwise appears fine.

Are your rabbits for meat, Terri?

If so, I strongly suggest you dispatch and send her to freezer camp. Why put your rabbits at risk for a come-by-chance feral rabbit that may have something nasty like vent disease?

That may sound harsh and heartless, but I also think it is in your own rabbits' best interests.

Good idea to post pictures. I will not be able to help you with a diagnosis . . . I've never actually seen vent disease. I'd just hate to see you endanger your rabbits because of this feral. I would like to strangle whoever thought is was a good idea to release it . . . but that's another issue.
