I have been told that the "occasional" star is not surprising and "just happens". But, I'm getting a lot of them. One doe throws almost all kits with stars and the other about half her litters. What's up with that?

__________ Mon Jun 03, 2013 9:25 pm __________

Actually, I just learned from another breeder who is familiar with my rabbits' pedigrees that there is a buck on the pedigree of my buck and one doe that threw all starred kits. So...the gene has been passed down and by breeding brother to sister I'm just intensifying the frequency in the litters. :-(

My first SF buck had one, it was cute. But I'm sure it's genetic and a DQ if you show.

Are we talking tiny kit-forehead marks that go away as they mature or white marks they have their whole lives?

Ones that stay forever.

__________ Tue Jun 04, 2013 7:00 pm __________

Definitely a DQ on the show table. :x

Isn't it genetic? A little like how some lines have more silver than others? I know a breeder whose buck is too silvery to show, and I just got a buck from her that has a lot of silver too (I don't show). So, I'd think that the amount of silvering is genetic. And if it is the amount of silvering that causes the stars, then the stars are genetic

from what i was told it is genetic...so they are supposed to be removed from breeding stock. Breeder I got a few of mine from had one in a litter...she was heartbroken about it since he was the sweetest of the whole litter :(

white spots...not like the silvering they are supposed to get but a white spot they tend to be born with them when they are suppose to be born solid...sometimes they will silver enough to cover it up and hide it, but it pops up in their offspring so they really should be taken out of breeding.

I do cull all the starred kits. I'm working on getting additional breeding stock so I can work that genetic feature out of my herd eventually. I don't think it is possible to eliminate entirely but with the closely related breeders I currently have, it is showing up too frequently.

Bumping this old thread because I was curious if this is the kind of "star" you were talking about? I just had a doe in my SF litter born with a star.

Is this the snipette/star that goes away? Or look like something that stays?

I have several of them, and they have a relative that has a totally white foot. Seems to me this is definitely the Vienna gene.

Why do I say that? Well I have two SF with blue eyes.

The ones with white marks are culls, but I am using the blue eyes to test breed the herd. If anyone wants to test breed with me, let me know. We can trace these lines and breed it out if you want.

Though I am seriously thinking of keeping separate whites (which I know will pop out eventually) just for the pelts.

I agree a BEW SF would be gorgeous, but yeah, just something for RT.

Thanks for the advice, I was guessing this one's mark might end up staying. Time will tell.
I'll be looking forward to when its eyes open soon to see if they are blue.

If it was the vienna gene then wouldn't you be getting some bew offspring from crossing these closely related rabbits that both throw marked offspring?

That is the next step in the process. No offspring with marks have been bred, they have all been culls. And I culled all the white marked ones from my litter as well, none are ever kept. But the two blue eyes were so different, they were kept and now that I've inherited the herd, I'm going to continue the experiment.

Bro and sister will be bred, and I should have a definitive answer in a couple of months.

I've seen REW SF and really want them. I know, blasphemy. XD Mad Hatter Rabbitry is ruining me with all their gorgeous, rare buns.

On the other hand, sorry about the star problems. I think it's quite neat, like a horse, but I suppose for showing you wouldn't want that. Obviously.

I don't mind the stars, they are kinda cute. I don't have any rabbit with them or that produce them. Maybe in 50 years they will be a recognized show type, lol.

I think a blue eyed SF would be neat *ducks to avoid rocks*

Could you post pics?
