I messaged with Sandra Starck. The wooly SFs she has had have fur that is quite like that of an angora. (I saw a pic of one of her woolies in her FB album...wow, is it ever a beauty!) She doesn't spin and isn't familiar with wool enough to judge quality. She has promised her "woolies" to a spinner who is interested; but will let me know if she ends up with more.
I'm strongly leaning toward splitting my herd.
1. SF bred per SOP.
2. SF bred for wool.
For #1, I have one senior doe (black) and one junior doe (blue) that do not include the harle/wool gene in their pedigrees. I have a breeder friend holding a nice buck to give me in the Fall. This will allow me to begin building the quality of this part of the herd toward meeting the SOP.
For #2, I have the senior doe, her woolie offspring (gender not determined yet), and the senior doe's son. It was the breeding of her to her son that produced the woolie kit. I also have a SF/FA buck who himself isn't going to have much of a wool coat (unless he surprises me) but since he carries the wool gene for sure will make a good sire for this line of my herd.
This seems to be the best option as I don't want to cull my senior wool gene carrying doe. She is a good momma. And, I wanted more woolers. So, it just seems to fit me well. At least, the decision makes me happy so I think it is the right one for me.
