Silver Fox -- Harlequin?

I know it would take more effort to keep the carriers. I've decided that I'm not going to breed my buck if he's a harlequin carrier, but I might if he is a wool carrier. Some of my family friends and I would love to make our own yarn, and if I can do that with the Silver Fox's beautiful coat... Ooo.

I have to admit to being curious about the wool potential of a SF displaying the wool gene... If spinnable it would be lovely. The little kit I have showing woolieness will be kept long enough to see what happens. If it ends up just being fuzzy like the SF/FA mix I have, it will go to freezer camp. If it turns out to have a wool worthy of collecting and spinning...it will be a keeper.

Once you know whether or not it is worth spinning, tell us! I think it would be awesome. How long do you have to wait in order to determine if it is just fuzziness or wool?

I messaged with Sandra Starck. The wooly SFs she has had have fur that is quite like that of an angora. (I saw a pic of one of her woolies in her FB album...wow, is it ever a beauty!) She doesn't spin and isn't familiar with wool enough to judge quality. She has promised her "woolies" to a spinner who is interested; but will let me know if she ends up with more.

I'm strongly leaning toward splitting my herd.
1. SF bred per SOP.
2. SF bred for wool.

For #1, I have one senior doe (black) and one junior doe (blue) that do not include the harle/wool gene in their pedigrees. I have a breeder friend holding a nice buck to give me in the Fall. This will allow me to begin building the quality of this part of the herd toward meeting the SOP.
For #2, I have the senior doe, her woolie offspring (gender not determined yet), and the senior doe's son. It was the breeding of her to her son that produced the woolie kit. I also have a SF/FA buck who himself isn't going to have much of a wool coat (unless he surprises me) but since he carries the wool gene for sure will make a good sire for this line of my herd.

This seems to be the best option as I don't want to cull my senior wool gene carrying doe. She is a good momma. And, I wanted more woolers. So, it just seems to fit me well. At least, the decision makes me happy so I think it is the right one for me.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking... but I don't know who has what in my buck's pedigree. Can you tell me everyone who is confirmed to have the wool or harlequin gene?

Summer 4 is the source. Other names to look for are: Starck's Big Jake, or basically any rabbit with 'Starck' in the name. But definitely, Summer 4 and Starck's Big Jake. (I don't know that Big Jake has been confirmed to have harle gene but he is confirmed to have the wool gene. Any rabbit coming from either Summer 4 or any "Starck" rabbit should be test bred to determine harle gene presence.)

Dang it. Well, I calculated that if Summer 4 and Edy (I saw on her facebook that Edy produced harli's) then my buck has a slim chance of being a harlequin carrier. Does Summer 4 have the wool gene?
