I promised to send Kyle@theHeathertoft some fiber from my Angora goats, and discovered that the wool I had bagged up was kind of "dirty" since it had fallen to the leafy ground whilst shearing. So I grabbed a pair of scissors, and got to work on Alby.

Here is her un-sheared side:

The wool removed all in one piece:

So Kyle,

I told you the wool would be aged and not smell too "goaty" but I lied!

Like a rug!

I sprinkled it with Diatomaceous Earth in case there are any wee beasties making it their home, although I didn't see any, and boxed it up. I hope to get it in the mail to you tomorrow.

Remember- clean is a relative term... you will still have your work cut out for you washing and carding it. I hope you have fun with it. :)

So... if he mixes it half and half with the fiber from his Angora rabbits, could he still label it as 100% Angora? :D

Nope- the fiber from Angora Goats is called Mohair. So it would be an Angora and Mohair blend! How hoity-toity is that, I ask you?

__________ Sat Aug 04, 2012 8:53 am __________

LOL looks like fun!!

Well, it wasn't really. Alby is not the nicest goat in the world, so I tied her to the fence, and she still tried to gore me. When that didn't work, she wanted to bite me, or at least nibble. To make matters worse, Oprah (dominant goat) liked the fact that Alby was unable to escape, and slammed into her side after rearing up to full height for maximum impact. :x

So here I am, scissors in one hand, trimmed wool in the other, crouched by the side of the goat, trimming carefully away while trying to keep my head out of striking distance, meanwhile keeping a wary eye on Oprah, who was stalking around like a schoolyard bully with her hackles up... which would cause poor Alby to slew her body around, and I keeping hold of the wool so it didn't fall into the dirt...

But we all survived, and I didn't cut Alby with the scissors, so all's well that ends well. :) Maybe Kyle will knit me a helmet! Er- a hat! Yes, a hat! :p

I want angora goats.....or cashmere....or llamas, but buns will have to suffice for now. Loved your description of the trim-experience....next time, might want to tie outside the main pen?

That's what I usually do, but we made a new pen for them, and the corral panel is wedged into the no-climb fencing, and I could NOT for the life of me un-wedge it! So I just climbed over. But for side two, I am going to take her out. I used to use dog clippers or horse clippers on them, but the scissors are actually faster!
