At least I hope I am!

This is a litter born last Monday. Mom is a broken red Satin doe. She is brilliant red with a white chest, tummy and feet. Dad is a cross fawn buck. He has red satin in his background.

What are my chances some of these little beauts are red. Good, I hope! And please explain the satin gene to me. Is it a straight recessive?

Reds in most breeds must have two wideband genes and red bellies so they look like selfs.

Fawns on the other hand are reds who don't have wideband and do have white bellies so breeding your white bellied red satin to a fawn should only produce more of the same (unless they create blue or chocolate fawns or torts or other colours due to recessives)

The only other variables are smuttyness and the Rufus factors - if your doe is a nice clear red then smut (which dulls the coat and gives a smokeyness) should only come from the sire but if he has nice clear reds in his background your chances are good :)

Rich dark reds have a lot of rufus factors (++++) while orangey fawns have a few (++) and pale fawns have none (-) I get these from my chinchilla crosses, some are so pale they look like orange tinted frosties

If one of the kits gets a bunch of Rufus factors from both parents and no smutt then s/he should be a nice bright red.

Satin is supposed to be a straight recessive but there are other factors have been bred for so many satin crosses have particularly shiny coats but lack the unique fur structure but if the buck has satin in his history he might carry the satin gene and produce 50% Satins with this doe but I cannot help on how to tell the Satins and non Satins apart

The three brokers with not as much white look like reds, the other broken looks like red but with less rufus (might turn color). two of the solid ones look more tort or smutty red (they are darker inside the ears, the other solid I just can't see enough. You will see pink inside ears, pink bellies and light eye circles on a true red because they are agouti. As they get fur the pink will turn very light (whitish). You won't be able to tell for sure until they're older. They might lighten to orange. That is in satins, don't know for sure about other breeds. Both parents need to carry the satin gene since it is recessive.

Thanks everyone! I can't believe the subtle differences you see and my untrained eye misses!

I will try to post pictures of the parents today.

__________ Thu Jul 24, 2014 6:09 pm __________

Here is momma...

Hello. In my humble experience, they are either heavily Rufused fawns or smuttier reds. Your doe is beautiful, I like her body type. My Rubin (NZR) is much deeper red. An these babies look rather more red then my fawns so far (except the charlie and middle-middle kit) . However, I would expect reds to be deeper red... Seems like no one really helps you. Also, the charlie kit is so adorable.

Thanks Mark. Their eyes should be open soon so I plan to take them out next week for another photoshoot. They are much darker than my fawn rabbits, so I hope to see some deepening of color.
