I breed Standard Rex and recently acquired a harlequin buck Aa Bb C_ D_ eje
that I have bred to broken red, broken amber and red charlie does for the purpose of getting some tri-colors.
Well, the first litters are in the nest box starting about 3 weeks ago and it's fun to see the new variety.

Now I'm getting harlequin kits too! Since this is not a recognized variety I'm wondering if there is a standard that would be good to work toward? Since, they are not recognized, I won't be showing any, just keeping for my own use and for any customers that want to use them for tri-color breeding. I'd appreciate input from anyone who has experience with tri-color breeding or the harlequin variety. Thanks.

Can't really help you since I have just recently delved into tri Rex :( But I sure would LOVE to see some pictures of your new kits!!! My tri doe is still a young JR and I just put a deposit on young tri buck, so it will be awhile for me :)

All I can say, from my brief Tri Mini Rex program, is to use the same standard for the breed Harlequin.

But since you are using them for tri program, matching up the markings needed for a correct harlie isn't really necessary, as those one will not be shown. If the color is good then they will make good tris.

It's quite interesting to see the variation in markings on the harlequin kits. So far there are about 16 in 5 different litters. There's one little guy that actually has the split down the middle of his face with dark on one side and light on the other. It's kind of fun because there are both black and brown based,as well as dense and dilute. It will be interesting to see as they grow.

I have saved a couple of red charlies to breed to my harlequin buck and have a litter of 10, all broken of course, from the first one, most tri and the rest red. They have the markings that I have been wanting, like the dalmatian dogs. Most didn't appear to have nose markings at first. It turns out that some actually do. It's just that they were red and didn't how for the first few days.

RR, not according to my SOP but I've also got an old one

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one getting humongo-litters

The standard for the color pattern is probably the same across breeds. You can probably follow the harlequin breed pattern for solids, it has a lot of pics of the ideal pattern, and most of the MR tri standard. Tri isn't really complicated in the MR standard compared to what it takes to breed them. It lists the color combinations with some descriptions of the shade, eye color that matches the color combination, and any color toenails. Then I think the same details of the broken pattern are applied to tri patterns. Colored ears, around eyes, back pattern, and an even nose pattern. At least 10% color and not more than 50%.
