Related Rabbit Breeding?

Hi, I recently got 2 new netherland dwarfs and the seller said they would make some nice babies so I bough to pair. I just recived the pedigrees and turns out they have the same dad. and different dams.Is it still safe to breed them? The Buck is the black himi and the doe is the Siamese smoke pearl, there sooo pretty!

It's totally fine to breed them, it'll just increase the likeliness of some genes

That is a classic line-breeding approach, and it looks like your rabbits have some nice traits that you would want to "set" in your herd. Go for it!

Yes, the only breeding relationship that is advised against in rabbits is full siblings.

Because of the blind (glaucoma) gene that started in NZ in Europe/England then brought over with NZ to the US, we are getting leary of even mother/son or father/daughter matings. I'm not saying not to do it, we still do on a limited basis, but am trying to put more generation(s) in between the matings as I really like line breeding for quality. It is showing up in rex from breeding with NZ for size. If a carrier of the blind gene joins up with another carrier, a major veterinarian study stated that there is a 12% chance of it appearing in one of more of the kits, but the others may or may not be carriers. Just wanting to pass it on from my random research!

Thanks for that info! I will not be breeding this pair together a lot since I have 3 other netherland dwarfs aswell that I can breed them to also.

I'm intrigued... NZ are a US breed. I know they went from the US to the UK just after WW2, so late 1940s/early 50s, but I can't imagine them going in the opposite direction. The breed standards are a lot different to US, and different again in Europe.

I am looking for this excellent study that this info came from, I wish I had saved it! I'll try to find it and post a link for you. I think it may have something maybe to do with the REW NZ having the gene and being used so much both here and Europe as test animals. But will see if I can find it again.
