Hello Everyone.

New Here! Just getting into this hobby and have a question hopefully some of you can help out with.
I purchased the buck in the attached photos yesterday and have no idea what breed of rabbit it is.
The lady I purchased him from said that his previous owner "had papers" for him but she did not get them from her.
This leads me to believe that he is a purebred of some sort but I cannot find any pictures of breed standards that quite match up to him.
He has a velvety coat like a Rex, but as you can see he also has lop ears.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I tried to attach the photos but they are too big. Here is a dropbox link to them.

Welcome to RabbitTalk, jiggidaboo. :hi:

Glad someone was able to help you out.

"Papers" for a rabbit simply mean its pedigree - its family tree, so to speak. It does not guarantee that the rabbit is purebred, although it certainly may be.

Just a hint for the future: please do not post your topic more than once. It gets confusing. Thanks! :)

Understood MaggieJ, was not sure where exactly the topic fit best.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Yep, velveteen lop. You probably couldn't find any standards because they are a working breed, meaning they have not yet completed passing ARBA committee. They are up for their 2nd showing (and hoping passing) for solids. Solids have to pass before brokens can be even considered (sigh). Here's a link to the current working SOP and breed club :) I'm not a member of it, but watch it and other pages since keep peeking at them. Miss them and friend keeps poking me with cute pictures of her tri colors lol....I feel rabbitosis coming on. Looks to be black tortoise in color, and good fur :) I would caution though that a resting mat be put in his normal cage if haven't already, VL do not have the best genetics overall when it comes to feet. Some lines are GREAT with their feet....others are still work in progress.

Yep, velveteen lop. They are up for second presentation today! Very exciting.

Any idea where he came from originally? How old is he? Does he have an ear number? Might be able to help you track down his breeder.

To be kept in mind, with those ears, velveteen lops can't normally be kept in cold temperatures at all.
Even above freezing, if ears become numb and tingly, they might nibble or otherwise damage the source of irritation.

An unheated shed or outbuilding might not be enough.

And freezing temps are definitely not OK, maybe I can find a link to BHs old thread about the frostbite on her bucks ears.
