I have rabbit that had her first litter yesterday. I think she is a mix between a satin and a small breed. The father is a rex. She is about 2/3 his size. I believe she may have been an easter rabbit. She was found loose in my neighborhood. In mid june. She was not full grown. She was with the male daily until Aug 26th when he went back to his owner (I was rabbit sitting him this summer). Around 6pm last night I foung her licking a baby on the floor that was cool to the touch and lifeless. She was just finishing cleaning it all up. I found two babies by my laundry, where she has a box she made into a nest, those two were warm and clean. The cool baby did not revive and I think it was still born. So there was a small puddle of clear liquid with some blood, maybe a quarter teaspoon, on the floor. The doe seems well and fed the babies about 10 am. ( Now they have full little tummies. :) ) She is acting and eating normal, is active, and not distressed. But I keep finding fresh blood leaking from her bottum. I find some every few hours, on her legs and bottum with a few droppes to a quarter teaspoon on the floor as well. Then she cleans herself up again. The blood is fresh and bright red.

So my question is, is it normal for her to still be bleeding some now and then 24 hours after giving birth? And might this be a sign of a problem for her, should I be concerned? What can / should I do for her?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Caroline! I am much relieved. This is my first pet rabbit. We named her Lil'Bun. I will keep an eye on her behavoir and food, hay, water intake etc (as I always do) for any signs of a problem. I am so excited to have the babies! I will check them daily and hope they dont develope any problems. So far things are going well!

That sounds fairly normal. Like Caroline said, it may go on for a couple days. Just keep an eye on her and make sure the bleeding doesn't increase and she doesn't seem in pain. The fact that she is nursing her litter is a good sign!

Good luck with the new little ones!
