I am fairly new as a bunny owner and have two mini lops. They are gorgeous. We have a problem with the albino one having osteomylitis. Some say it is all dietery. We have had an operation to remove the inside of the abcesses. She seems ok. It is very expensive to have teeth removed. Some info on the net talks of using the intravenous penicillian G but the vet says wait and see how she goes. I am scared if i just wait and see the next time the abcess flares up it will be to late. If i do get the teeth removed do i go to a special rabbit vet($1000) or to the local vet($500)- i do not want the bunny to die but even the teeth removal operation is not proof of her living. I am trying to get her to only eat grass and green hay mainly but she needs to also gain some weight after the first operation. Any help would be really helpful.[/b]

Welcome to RabbitTalk, Maedy.

I split your post off the other thread because it is a different problem altogether and having its own topic will help you get answers. To start a new thread, click on the NEW TOPIC button at the top left of each forum.

I can't help you with the current problem but I'm sure there will be other people who can provide you with information.

Welcome to rabbittalk!

Hopefully someone who has dealt with this before will chime in. I did a google search and it seems penicillin G is a good treatment. Here is the link:

One thing I know personally, if you have a rabbit on antibiotics give them a probiotic daily to try and keep some good gut flora alive.

Thanks for this. Every time i google or search on the subject it seems to lead me to the bicillian injections but my vet is not convinced and wants to wait and see how she goes.
I think i will print off the info and take it to the vet. You mentioned the probiotic. which type of probiotic should i give a rabbit and what dosage? Lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium lactis , lactobacillus rhamnous , SB floractiv . I have never seen a human overdose on Probiotics but can a rabbit. I assume it would have to be dairy free and the SB floractiv can be constipating so maybe not this one. The other question is can the commoness of osteomylitis be also a problem due to the commercial rabbit food with the seeds for some rabbits who choose this more than the grass. And the other thing is can it be the vitamin D Deficiency from being either inside or in hutches with little light. Humans are found to be vitamin D Deficient and this does effect bones(teeth) and immune system. Has anyone used Vitamin D on their rabbits? What dosage is safe. Vitamin D is fat soluble but best in more sunlight i realize. thanks for any help.http:

If you offer food without the offending elements in it, the rabbit cannot choose the offending elements over the better elements. Rabbits cannot OD on the probiotics. You may supplement a bit of vitamin D-- find a gel cap product, open the capsule, and squirt a couple drops on some feed-- a couple times a week. Youcan mix some Vit D in some yogurt-- the yogurt will not harm the rabbit-- and then, that way, you can administer two forms of supplementation at the same time.
