Would you call this little fellow Chocolate Chestnut? Or is it just a poorly marked Black Chestnut?

Just curious as I would like to figure out what my albino buck is hiding :)

The mom is a japanese harlequin and the Dad is A NZW/CAL cross who is completely white.
The litter of eight had 4 broken (all chestnuts) and 4 solid (3 blacks and 1 chestnut). So I know my buck carries REW, Broken and probably black (his mother is a black Californian).

well see that's what I'm not sure about - It has some dark tips to the fur but I can't decide if it's Brown or Black. it's mostly concentrated on it's ears and a bit on it's back. when I blow into the fur I'm having difficulty seeing rings. I don't know if it's because of my lack of experience or it's abnormal.

I see a lot of variation in my castor (chestnut) Rex, not only on the, um, "base color" (some more "red" others more "brown"), but on surface and ring color.

I can see black edging on your kit's ears, so think the one just lacks much tipping with black right now.

I'm no expert, but Skysthelimit really likes working with the castors, and what I have learned from her is:

1. They go through a lot of variation as they grow

2. It is hard to get the right ring definition (length of banding on the hair shaft)

The black ticking gives them both away, definitely normal black chestnuts. A good place to see what chestnut they are is the tips of the ears if can't really tell any where else. The bands are just a bit different. Like MS said, they can vary widely and getting a good one with proper even banding can be very hard to do.
