Had to return the other one, it kept randomly shutting down so we returned it today. This is the first time using this one and so far so good. LOL Maybe this one will be ok. I hope so.
The other one was an Acer and had windows 7, this one is a Dell and has windows 8 but DD is used to it now so that's ok. Now back to learning computer stuff.
DD has the patients of a flea  and can only set this up for me and help me with the basics and my mom also got one and is lost on it. Can anybody recommend a program or book for folks like us? Please!
I told my mom if I could find a program that could walk her through it she'd be fine but I don't know if one even exist.

I have Windows 8.1 on my gaming computer, but I use Stardock's Start8 to make the User Interface like Windows 7. A lot of Windows 8 users use it because some of the "features" of Win 8 aren't exactly user friendly.

Start8 puts the start button back onto the screen and there's an option to boot directly to the desktop instead of going through the Metro UI screen.

For those who liked XP through Win7, it makes an easier transition to Win 8.

There's a free 30 day trial in case you don't like it. If you want to buy it, it's just 5 bucks.

OMG! There is no solitaire on this laptop!(GASP!) :pullhair: :eek:verreaction: :storm-cloud:

No solitaire?!! That is awful! I love playing solitaire on the computer. It's really nice when I don't feel like shuffling a real deck of cards.
Hope your second computer works better than your first!

WHAT?!? Worthless pile of... er... silicone and plastic!

They evidently want you to download it separately as a Win8/8.1 app. At least it's free.

At least we have Tex as our "Techno-Peasant Tech Support Tech"! (Try saying that ten times fast! I dare ya! )

Ah, well at least you can still get it.

Does Windows 8 have any advantages over 7 besides being made for touch and mobility? It's nice that you can still make it look like Windows 7, but you used to be able to do that simply by switching to "Classic View". I did that for my uncle... his Vista looks and works like XP. Apparently, they didn't want to make it that easy for people any more. :?

Thank you everybody!   I have so much to learn already and I thought DD knew more than she does, it turns out, I may know more than she does. That ain't RIGHT!  As I said she has the patience of a flea with any kind of gizmo or car but with her chickens and our GSD Bruno and Mac she's a great mommy! I love learning new stuff so I guess its up to me, maybe a trip to the library.....
Hey it just occurred to me.....I can google that now! :p The old computer couldn't handle much of that, most sites were to much for it. I googled the problem with the Acer on that computer while I had it and there were a lot of people who had that problem with that computer. Oh well lesson learned.
I hope ya'll don't mind lots of computer questions, I am bound and determined to be able to learn how to do all this stuff myself! :)

PS Its so funny with the spell check thing, there are so many words we use today that it considers misspelled like google and lol are under lined in red. I am so easily entertained aren't I?

And a lot of words aren't even in the "dictionary" so it thinks you are misspelling real words sometimes!

There are technical advantages with Windows 8 and 8.1 over 7. Some users even like the new User Interface (UI), although I'm not in that group.

Win 7 was less of a resource hog than Vista was. Win 8 continues that trend and uses fewer resources than 7. That gives the apps or programs more power to run instead of the Operating System (OS) taking so much overhead.

Win 8/8.1 also has a Hybrid Boot feature that gives it much faster bootup times than prior OSs. While that's a good feature, it also has its drawbacks. With Hybrid Boot you can't do a true cold boot when you need it. Even when shutting down completely, you're essentially doing a restart. You have to manually disable Hybrid Boot if you need to do a true cold boot. (And yes, you'll need to eventually).

If you want to play games, Win8 and 8.1 are the clear winners. Being lightweight OSs, they let the game run faster and with higher resolutions than older OSs.

Question - Is it safe to download a solitaire game from that site? DD says she doesn't trust none of that!!! :?
So I'm on my own here, she's never done it and I just wanted to be sure and is it some thing an amateur like me can do? :chicken:

Well, it's Microsoft, so it's as trustworthy as having Windows on your computer. Then again, I don't trust Internet Explorer, so I guess it's a personal thing.

Yay we did it! :cheer2: Its pretty primitive but I can play it and there are several other solitaire games with it that I didn't have on the old computer so its a trade off for now. As I learn these things maybe I can put in new ones. :)
