I've searched the threads and I think I've comprehended but I am not certain.

I understand that a REW NZW hides anything else in it's background--black, red, blue, purple, etc. Any colors that the REW is hiding would come out in a non-REW crossing.

I understand that the NZR is black agouti-based, with lots of rufus modifiers.

Reds are listed phenotypes as A_ B_ C_ D_ ee, however whites are listed __ __ __ __ __ since the white is dominant.

How is one supposed to figure out what going to come out in a nest box with a pedigree like that?? (LOL sorta.) I purchased a REW NZW buck to build some bulk into my Reds without compromising color--except the REW may compromise color??? The buck's pedigree is white for many generations back, so I can't tell you what they originally started with.

So I can assume I might end up with some agoutis, maybe black, and some reds???

Test breeding is the only way to figure out what's under the REW when a ped has generations of REW. One thing you can know is a REW cannot carry shaded or Chin, you can rule that out.

I usually avoid REWs for that reason, unless I have some time on my hands or colors where it just doesn't matter.

I'm sure this is wrong and I will be corrected, but I would think you'd have to take a shot at breeding and see what you get. That might help figure out the lurking colors.

(Any reds you don't want...I want to add a new red line to my herd)

Marinea, that may be possible; we could meet in the middle!!

So I'm going to have to just do the deed to find out. I know of one Red rabbitry about two hours from me that uses whites, perhaps I should contact them and get a white from them if Clue throws everything but red.

Reds are actually recessive in two colour loci - non extension AND wideband
Red = A_ B_ C_ D_ ee ww

And we do know that REW don't carry any other C-locus recessives
White = __ __ cc __ __ __

And as mentioned, there is no way to fill in the blanks without test breeding. A REW from a pair of NZReds would work but one from a long line of REW could be anything - most likely you'll get chestnuts, steels and maybe blacks but it is highly unlikely you'd get fawn (red without wideband) and even less likely you'd get reds :(

On top of this you must consider the Rufus factors that create a rich glowing red and not a pale orangey one, if the REW is low in these your fawns and red may turn out very light cream colour and it could take several generations to get the colour back

That's what I was thinking, but since the op said black,blue, purple...I was thinking it was a color where the name wasn't. Known or maybe said jokingly.

Yes, sorry, purple was said jokingly, since it's unknown what the NZW carries. Then I googled purple rabbit for the picture--let me tell you there are adult toys that show up when you google that!!

Oh no...
