Lighter coloured fur on feet is normal in self black rabbits

Self chinchilla that looks black = aa B_ cchd_ D_ Ee

So... even though the little bun looks more of a dark sooty gray now, she's still black?? o.0
COLORS!!! GAH! lol

How 'bout we try it this way....

What colour would you call your hair Syberchick70?

Stress-washed brown ;)

As you can see from the picture there is a WIDE range of 'brown' hair colours just as there is a wide variety of red and blond due to modifiers that subtlety alter the tone or shade or mixture of the hair

Animals have the same modifiers changing the colours of their fur and people select for perfectly coloured animals and cull the oddities - most of the time

In the next example the rabbit colours are genetically the SAME, all are sable points ( = aa BB cchl cchl D_ ee ) but the modifiers make them lighter or medium or darker sable points

I brought this kit inside to show you one of my "blacks" with grey on the bottom of his feet...But, it turns out this "black" is currently in the process of morphing into a silver tipped steel.

An Es e steel, since the father is orange and the doe is a blue self who carries a hidden copy of steel (she has a confirmed EsEs parent).
This kit's probable genotype is A_ B_ Cchd c Dd Es e. Since the doe has steel, in reality, I have no idea if she is a genetic self, or just looks like one.
This kit waited until almost 10 weeks to show me that little bit of silver.

Thank you all... and that's a lovely steel bunny!
So, as of now, I should just put 'self black' on the kit's color description?

Ok, so at 3 weeks, our 'black' kit, the one I posted a picture of due to her gray feet, is not really 'black' anymore.

She appears to be kind of a smokey color (I have now dubber her 'smokey', original, huh?)

Would she still be considered a 'black' bunny? I included on close up of her coat and it really shows the color better.

I can definitely see 'agouti' shading, ears are dark inside and eyes are brown.

Thanks! I guess it's showing up because the kits all look like they will be fluffy, like their dad ya think?

__________ Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:02 pm __________

Also, if I were to consider, say breeding mini lops on a very small scale, considering what my guy produced and his colors and such... What would be a good color/pattern whatever to breed him to?

It looks like your buck (Aa B_ cchl_ Dd Ee ENen) carries every recessive except perhaps chocolate ;) so you have a lot of options and must decide what you'd like to produce or what colours sell well in your area so you arent stuck trying to find cages for the bunnies.

I just thought I would add this to my own genetics/litter thread.

I was just gifted with pictures of my doe River (the momma of our litter)'s parents!

As it turns out, she IS a purebred Dutch, but doesn't have the proper Dutch markings.

Here is her dad (a blue-eyed Harlequin Dutch - part of a breeding program to establish Harlequin Dutch as a recognized breed)

And her mom (although her owner said that the doe always looked 'blue' in photos, she was actually more of a 'butterscotch' color)

And here is a picture of River (our doe) again, for reference

:p very interesting

:hmm: Dutch is supposedly recessive so I did not expect to see odd white marks in carrier kits.

Hotot's are genetically broken dutch (ENen dudu) and I guess it's not a huge step to believe that broken Dutch carriers (ENen DUdu) can look like charlies

This might might explain when rabbits believed to vienna marked never seem to have BEW kits when bred to another vienna marked rabbit - they might be Dutch carriers instead :groooan:

 Ahh genetics :runhills:

Well, I didn't know that, but I can see it expressed in one of River's broken blue kits.
It looks VERY close to a 'hotot'. We've dubbed her 'Liz', as in 'Elizabeth Taylor' (because of her eye makeup)

Appreciated these posts myself. Our blacks have grey on the bottom of their feet and a darker grey undercoat. I was coming on here to see if that was normal. :) :thankyou:
