I have a friend who will take her. Not to be mean but spending $50 to get a rabbit spayed that is only here because I couldn't give her away, and had planned to give her to my father in law to butcher before she got loose, seems silly.

Its not mean - it was just an idea if you were attached to her, and liked having her run loose. Rabbits are wonderful creatures but they are prey animals. They multiply by the hundreds for a reason. That said, some individuals stand out as special :) Good luck with her.

And I hear you on the finances - what was going to be $200 plan to be set up and producing our own meat has mushroomed into a bigger and bigger and more expensive project! I am still really not sure how its all going to work out, whether we're paying more in the long run! Not to mention the time. But we are wanting some self-sufficiency and to know how our food has been raised. A part of me is thinking sheep would have been so much easier...

I hear you on projects growing! I started with six cages and five rabbits and we are now over 50 rabbits with a chronic cage shortage.

But what other animal can be such a great pet and taste so great too!

My problem was I wanted to raise meat and then I thought if we just sell a few that will pay the feed and this kind/color/size will sell good so lets get them too and and and........

*Groan* sounds like I'm headed down the same road, as the colors and numbers multiply... not to mention, I have 2 breeds and wish I also had Rex! There should be a name for this condition and a warning that goes out with all rabbits "caution, rabbit projects expand rapidly" or something like that... yes its true they are adorable pets and the ones that are not are tasty - its not like breeding cats, dogs, horses, anything else, really. They have their own little special niche! I guess I'm done for - we just ordered a large $300 enclosure to separate out the bucks... I don't know if we'll ever get enough to eat to make up for the overhead! I hope someday...

You are DOOOOOOOOOMED!!!

So am I

Beautiful babies.

I am surprised your exercise pen doesn`t have a wire bottom to stop the rabbits digging out and a top to stop them jumping out. A top and bottom also stops predators getting in, especially if you are not there to watch them all the time.

Around here, we call it Galloping Rabbitosis. :D

Sounds about right!! We definitely caught it...
My boyfriend is still reeling with what hit him, he didn't realize he was slated to become a rabbit farmer in life ;) Now he lists it as one of his professions when asked - I think that's a good sign, personally, that the resistance has weakened...

Resistance is futile...

Not only is resistance futile but Galloping Rabbitosis can be complicated by companion conditions of Hatch-a-lottitis and Craigs's list bargain grabiosis.

VERY bad, very bad!

I fear I suffer from all the above plus a few still undiscovered by science.

I've given up on trying to control it, I'm just trying to contain it. I have to stop myself from trying to raise all 16 Rex varieties.

Rex eh? I got two 5 year old standard rex dirt cheap - broken grey buck and a red doe - in the hopes of getting one or two litters out of them. No luck so far but thats the fun bit, living in hope. :D

 I feel you there... I only want some black & tan Belgian Hares, red Belgian Hares, blue Americans, and Opal, Lynx and blue otter Rexes, and maybe some Chinchilla Rex. Its not that many, right? Now, how to stuff them all in the same cage...
