where are is the rabbit waste going to go? Looks nice so far...but it's so clean, makes me wonder where all the mess will end up.

We plan to put in slant boards and gutters to catch the waste and funnel to a container to take out to a compost heap. We just ran out of time today to finish it. I put down some 6mil plastic to catch the stuff overnight.

Looks great! When I saw your other post with pics of those cages, I started considering them. They look fantastic!

They took a little longer to make with the slant fronts, but I like them overall. I really like the doors and the angle to reach in there. Even with them being 36" wide by 30" deep, it is not too hard to reach the corners. I am going to make one more pretty soon, to have as a grow out cage. If you would like to know the dimensions and how I cut the pieces, etc., just let me know.

Shannon,
I don't want to be a stick in the mud,
the whole thing looks excellent but?
I can't help but notice that the bottom of the
walls appear separated from the floor.
Are you going to block that somehow to prevent tiny predators
from having free access?

Well, it had crossed my mind, what kind of "tiny" predators were you referring to? We have four outside cats that pretty much keep all the little ones down, snakes, mice, moles, etc. I was more worried about raccoon, possum or skunk as we have those too...I sure would not want to lose any buns because I left those spaces open...

Rats. In the north mink, weasels. But mostly rats.
Hmmm...I guess I was thinking that the cats would take care of any of those, but I sure don't want to just assume that...I will take a look and see what I need to do with those slots. Thanks everyone, this is such a great place to learn!

It looks really incredible... WoW, Im completely impressed! Your set-up is amazing- you did a truly excellent job! :) If your really worried about those small openings a piece of carefully placed plywood should do the trick. Actually when I first saw them in your pics I thought you left the small openings to help with drainage when you clean the floors.
The only thing I noticed that you may consider if you want is adding a small "bunny board" (piece of flat plywood) so the bun has a place to stand where they are not on the wire so they dont get sore hocks. Other that that... everything is fantastic!

Just on principal, block those gaps. You could go years without problems, but you cannot depend on cats to keep rats out. Many cats will not take on a full grown rat... and even if your cats will, once the rats get through the gap the cats cannot follow.

Pickles,

Thanks! Well, that was kind of my idea, to be able to just hose it out those slots...we shall see. They actually do have resting boards, they are plastic and they look sort of like the top of a broiler pan...you just cannot see them well because of the color.

Maybe put in a solid piece of wood to fill the gap, but use screws or wing nuts or something like that that can be undone when it is time to hose the building out. After all, it's not a job you will need to do very often if you have trays or something similar to catch the manure.

You could also use hardware cloth to close the gaps. That way nothing can come in but the openings would still be open for ventilation, drainage, etc. Just a thought.

__________ Sun Mar 20, 2011 8:25 pm __________

And I really like the looks of those cages.
