I'm wondering if my new chocolate chestnut Netherland doe may have miscarried. I've seen what looked like blood in her drop pan for a day or so now. I had positively palpated her at the breeder's on Saturday when I bought her. I'm hoping the move didn't stress her too much. When I went to pet her today she immediately lifted...not normal for a pregnant doe is it?

Depends on the doe. Willingness to breed sometimes indicates the doe is not pregnant... but it is only an indicator, not proof. As you get to know this doe better, you will have good idea of whether or not it is a reliable sign. Unfortunately, the blood tends to make me think perhaps she did miscarry.

I just spoke to the breeder I bought her from and she said what you said, that her lifting isn't a definite sign. She seems to think that it may just be dark urine. She said protein can cause dark red urine. I feed 18% feed and my doe is accustomed to 16%. I forgot to get feed from the breeder to switch her over gradually, so she went straight onto my feed. Maybe that is what is going on?

That is quite possible. I know the first time I saw dark urine from my doe I was FREAKING OUT. Thought she was dying. It can be quite scary. Personally, I'd leave her, try and keep from stressing her too much, and hopefully there will be some babies in a few weeks.

Have you tried palpating again?

She's 17 days along. I did palpate again and I definitely feel something in there but not the distinct marbles or "grapes" that I felt before. It felt more lumpy like possibly elongated bodies? I'm hoping anyway...

You won't feel the grapes at this point, they're growing :) After about 14 days they stop feeling like grapes, I believe. I think you're most likely fine.

Red urine is quite common. I don't know why I didn't think of that!

In the snow, I have seen red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple left by the cottontails. It seems to depend on what they have been eating.

Because try as you might, MaggieJ, it's impossible to remember everything there is to know about rabbits, LOL.

Oh good! I feel so much better. Thanks everyone! I just had a litter of four stillborn NDs on Wednesday, so I suppose I'm just being paranoid.
