I have 5 month old mini rex and they are littermates they both have very good type but I have noticed they have long guard hairs. I was just wondering if I should cull them or if they will loose these darn hairs? Or use them for brood?

I dont breed rex but found this info on the forum. post137395.html?hilit=Rex%20guard%20hairs#p137395

Ok. I wanted to see if that was a baby coat or not. Looks a little longish on the sides to be Rex, but I had a beautiful REW buck that had prominent guard hairs, and his coat was a bit longish. If it is a baby coat, there is a possibility that it will molt out into a more normal coat.

Hope it helps

I personally would not I like to see even further on a Mr. And that one would automatically be peted out:( in my barn that is.
However if it's just for fun or pet then I would say why not lol however in a show I don't think it would do to well.
As a brood well that I don't know you could try I guess:D

I never let it slide, it tends to be one of those things that will haunt you in the end especially if you do any kind of line breeding. If you show ARBA, some judges will count good fur over type...most will look at type and fur on equal grounds. So it is extremely important to only use the best ones you have fur wise and type wise. Least that's been my experience.

It did molt out, and it currently has one of the best Rex coats I have.

That being said, I would have to see yours and see what you mean my prominent guard hairs. I kept two bucks, first molted out, second did not, bred him to his dam, and got one of the best does I have had. Excellent coat. His type outweighed everything else. Would I do it again,? Maybe, but it would have to be a stellar animal.

I think the second looks okay, but the first seems a bit iffy. Admittedly, I'm fairly new to the breed, but I don't like the look of the white hairs all over the top one.

The light hairs bother me longer than the length.

But at this age, it very well might molt out.

If the type is good at the age you generally cull for type, wait till jr prime. If it's not good at that age, it won't be any good.
