I'm sorry you lost Kit-Kat. Thats so sad! :(
Can you get a fecal done at the vet? You can take a sample in and have it tested, at my vet it used to cost 10.00. It might be a good idea to have a fecal sample done so you know wha t your dealing with. Could be a parasite or a virus. At least with a fecal sample they can hopefully see what the bunnies have. If the test is negative then you have to consider a virus and the Diatomaceous Earth won't help.

@Teddy I did

@AMD thanks, I will try that :)

we called the vet and they said,50 DOLLARS, 50 DOLLARS!
that is CrAzY!
(we went to the feed store, and they had the D.E.)

__________ Thu May 02, 2013 2:14 pm __________

oh, and we are going to dissect the pellets ourself :p (under a microscope)

__________ Thu May 02, 2013 4:34 pm __________

well, nothing in the pellets (I used 0.65) I was reading that E. cuniculi is in the pee... how would I do that???

__________ Thu May 02, 2013 4:49 pm __________

well, Tic-Tak (which turns out to be a girl) got a feeding from Marshmellow, I gave her some kale (just a tiny bit) and she seems to be doing a LOT better :)

Kitchen oatmeal (like Quaker Old-Fashioned/Large Flake Oatmeal) is an excellent food for young bunnies that have to be weaned early. You can soak it in goat's milk or KMR or even just warm water. A pinch of brown sugar helps to make them try it. I once had to wean a kit at 17 days and he did just fine on oatmeal, hay and the greens all my rabbits get. If your bunnies are not used to greens, just give the hay and oatmeal. After a few days, most young bunnies will graduate to dry oatmeal, but the mush helps prevent dehydration until they figure out the water bowl.

I'm sorry you're going through all this. It's very hard to watch kit after kit sicken and die. (((HUGS)))

Hope Tic-tac gets better soon.
50.00!!!! For a fecal?! Thats insane! I got my own fecal test kit because my vet went up to 15.00 (it was 10.00) on top of the cost of the gas to get there to pay someone else to do something I'm already trained to do! :?
Ugh 50.00 Thats robbery! Sorry 'bout that, I hate to see people get taken advantage of.
LittleBunny I hope the remaining bunnies will be ok soon. :) Hang in there! [[Hugs]]

well they seem to be doing fine, drinking, eating, I think they are ready for weaning :)

could I just take the kits away from Marshmellow and not return them? will she get mastitis if I do that?

Nah, she should be OK if you just move either the mom or the kits to another cage. Do give the kits something to huddle in, like a shoe box stuffed with hay so they can stay warm.

The doe should be just fine if you just take the kits, but you can give her some mint leaves to help stop the milk flow if you feel like you want to help her out.

Good luck with your baby bunnies! :clover:

I originally thought my one rabbit possibly had E.C. so I did tons of research on it. We actually tested her for it.

One thing that Barbi brown is very specific about is that it doesn't appear to be contagious and that in a litter only 1 will be affected. She says she has never had more than 1 in any litter have EC.

Not sure where that leaves you but you may want to email Barbi and see what her suggestions are. Have you ruled out mastitis?

Have you looked into their mouths and made sure that their teeth are not interfering with eating and drinking?

When our bun had her ear infection and had a tilted head I put in additional food and water bowls, lowered the water bottle to make sure she could comfortably reach and access food and water.

Just some ideas. It is very depressing to have kits die. I hope you figure out what is going on and the rest remain healthy.

well, Marshmellow has a pink bump on her belly, could it be mastitis?

the bump does not feel hot, just a little hard, do you want pictures?

Oreo's back leg was bitten off last night, by a raccoon. Here is what happened;

I went outside to feed/check on the bunnies, and I saw only Caramel & Twix sitting on the cuddle box, I opened the lid to the cozy box, and there was Oreo! I picked him up and saw a little patch of blood where his leg should of been, so I looked around the hutch, and I saw a little trail of blood going to the cuddle box.....

what do I do, put hydrogen peroxide on it?
he can hop, but the blood is disgusting :p

and yet I ask, do you want pictures?

Since there is no heat, I would say probably not.

Pictures are always helpful. :)

Oh no!

If the leg was taken at the joint and the end of the bone is intact, he might survive... but at five weeks, it is much more risky than if a newborn has that type of injury.

I am concerned that even if it does heal, he will have a life of suffering, because the stump will not be furred with the thick pad that is on the bottom of the foot. He will probably develop pressure sores on it when he gets to a more mature weight.

It would probably be kindest to end his life for him. :(

Hopefully someone with experience with that type of injury will see this and be able to advise you better.

For now, I would rinse it with betadine and water mixed to look like tea, but if you don't have that peroxide will work. Peroxide destroys delicate new skin cells, so should only be used as an initial wound wash.

If you have any type of topical spray like Blu-kote or Vetericyn, spray that on it afterwards.

I'm really sorry that you are having all of these problems with your first litter, especially since your mom found homes for them already.

(((Hugs))

thanks MSD, I called my grandpa (who raised rabbits) and he said the bump might be a "fly grub"

I will see if we have any betadine, thanks again

If there is a hole in the center, he is probably right.

Bot fly maggots get huge, and are difficult to pull out. One of my rabbits had one, and it was so large that I thought she had a piece of rabbit poop stuck to her fur.

I was able to pull it out with forceps. You have to be very careful not to rip it in half because they will cause a nasty infection in the wound tract. Once it is out, rinse the hole out with peroxide or betadine.

Maybe you have plain iodine? If so, mix it with water just like the betadine.

well, there is a little stump left (edit: I felt the bone, it is about 2 centimeters high), and we don't have iodine, or betadine. the feed store opens at 10:00....

__________ Sun May 05, 2013 11:57 am __________

no hole in the bump,

OMG, I am so sorry to hear all these trials you are going through! Poor Oreo too!!! If the amputation was on a front leg, it probably wouldn't bother him, but on a back leg, that will be difficult to get healed and keep healthy as those are the main propulsion for rabbtis :( :grouphug2:

Oh, no!

You are just being put through the wringer. As far as the mastitis, it would feel hot, like you can feel heat just emanating from it before you even make full contact. At least that is how it was when I had it and one my dogs had it. Very uncomfortable, hard and hot, hot, hot.

How awful about Oreo, poor little bun. :( I have no advice but I'm thinking good thoughts that things start improving for you.

AnnClaire, It is the hind leg.

Laura, It is a little hot, but not very

I am going to the feed store now

The spot on the belly looks like ringworm. Buy some Nu-stock when you are at the feed store.

I think Blu-kote might work for fungus, too- let me go check.
