I was given this buck yesterday. He is a little under a year old, 9 lbs, proven sire, and very sweet. I was told he is a Silver Fox, but I'm not so sure... I've never seen one in person, but from what I've read I don't think his fur is correct for SF? I was thinking maybe he looks more like an American Chinchilla?

Chinchilla steel colored mix breed. (silver tipped steel) I believe flemish giants do come in this color, but they call it steel grey.

Does anyone else think he looks like he's at least part flemish?

Not the first time I've seen people calling these "silver fox" though. It's nothing like it, not just the coat, but the color too. Silver fox have silvering made up of long white hairs scattered on a black coat, not the shiny silver tips of a chinchilla steel.

Yeah, I thought Flemish, too, or at least that the body type was mandolin rather than commercial. Small for that, though, but I bet it's an influence. And yes, the SF coat is totally different in texture and color.

As an AmChin breeder I would say he is NOT an AmChin (even my fugly production line AmChins have better conformation for the breed than this guy) or even a Giant Chin - He has an classic mandolin shape and monsterous ears so I vote small Flemish Giant or a cross

I agree his colour is steel chinchilla

Well, good thing he was free, and I just breed meat mutts!

Do you all think he would be decent for breeding with my various does (Calis, Satin, NZ, Mixes)?

My current starter buck is smaller than him - supposedly a Cali, but smaller. I've been wanting a new larger buck, and one with more color for pretty pelts... What do you think?

I think he'll be perfect for that job :D

I think his crosses with the Californians will be particularly nice since the Cali's have a finer bone that should offset his heavier ones AND you'll get some with his colouring depending of course on any hidden recessives they've got.

Thanks. I like him :D
I've always been a fan of blue roan horses, and blue heeler dogs, so it is fitting to have a blue roan rabbit too!
