Just got back from the show! :) It was fun...I spent more money than I anticipated, LOL.

Due to several rabbits conspiring to molt at the same time, I only brought my two juniors, Heathertoft's Fifth Street Queen (aka Fathead) Heathertoft's Poker Face (aka Pokerface...yeah her "nickname" isn't very imaginative, LOL).

Neither one placed especially well but they didn't do badly for being BABY-baby young!!!! :D Both judges seemed to like them, said they have promise but that they just haven't grown up enough yet. One of the judges allowed me to bring them both back to the table after Mini Rex were finished being judged so he could talk to me about their pros and cons, which was AWESOME of him!!!

Pokerface, my otter, has a meh face but she has excellent rufus factor and her ears are SUPER-perfect, except they "feel" thin. The judge said that a lot of juniors with "thin ears" don't grow the best coats, so I need to watch her coat like a hawk; if it doesn't improve like it should, she'll be pet-quality. :p But he liked her type, reasonable depth. She has an "attitude problem" and won't stop "pushing" when she's posed, so she needs to work on that...he said she "peaks" right where she should but the pushing makes her look flawed. :p

However, he (and EVERYBODY apparently) loves Fathead's, well, fat head!!! Nice wide face, short nose, very "cute" and proper. :) Both judges, while she was on the table being evaluated, commented on that really great head she has. She's got some fairly long ears but has the depth to balance it. Her hindquarters aren't as good as the rest of her, and the judge later told me that she's really nice and wide, REALLY wide...and she may grow up to be TOO wide. :| He said he likes to see senior does filled out like that, but this is a VERY young junior, pretty darn young to be THAT thick!!! So far she has the depth to balance that, too, but...SO WIDE. If she doesn't fill out super-hardcore, she'll be something for sure!

Actually, what surprised me was he said both are keeper-does until they're MUCH older, he said that both have a lot of potential to really shape up into some pretty spectacular senior does...IF Pokerface's coat comes in right and IF Fathead isn't too...well...fat-looking as a senior. I was starting to have my doubts but...methinks I'll just go ahead and keep them both. For the time being. ;)

I almost had to bail on going to the show at ALL last-minute...the person I was going to the show with suddenly couldn't go, so I was without a "buddy," and that sucks. I mentioned it to my dad, and (proving he's the best dad in the world) he said I should take his car instead; it has air conditioning and a full tank of gas. Suddenly I was good to go! :)

The show was awesome though! I arrived WAY early, got both does entered in both shows, and spent some time setting up and wandering around. :) Bought a second show-carrier...this one opens at the top, it's a three-hole for small rabbits. MUCH lighter than my huge behemoth four-hole monstrosity. Plus...it looks like I'll be showing more than four rabbits by the next show, so...it was a NEEDED purchase. Bought some other stuff (like an ARBA decal for my car...not putting it on my current car since that car gets to go away before winter, but as soon as I have some new-to-me used-car wheels, I'll slap that baby on there ASAP!) and then just relaxed for a while. :)

Pokerface was pretty miserable...she acted like she thought the world was coming to a horrible end. Fathead was freaked out at first but before long, she was drinking and eating as per normal...and then started playing with her pellet dish and an alfalfa cube. She was having a ball! Never seen a rabbit try to "binky" in a carrier before!!!

Then they called Mini Rex...to TWO tables at once!! They ran the Mini Rex for show A and B at the same time...at first I was all "WHAT IS THIS MADNESS??" but before long, realized how awesome an idea that is. One judge started with blacks, and worked his way down...the other judge started with REWs and worked his way up!!! In other words, judging didn't take a zillion years, it was quick and efficient and since both tables were right next to each other, I (and others) could run back and forth between them! :)

Once judging for Mini Rex was done (and I had the one judge's post-judging opinions) I returned to my spot to have a pulled-rabbit BBQ sandwich (for real, they do the BEST lunches!!!) and watch the commotion that is normal for a show. :) Then I wandered around all over, and found a lot of "free rabbit" signs. Ended up filling both my carriers to the hilt with free rabbits...one is a fair-sized Harlequin, and the rest of them are dwarf-breed culls...gonna fill my freezer!!! Tempted to hang onto the little blue buck I got though...he's DARN cute. :) However, can't keep 'em all!!! Gonna be SO busy tomorrow!!! I have some friends who might want them as pets, though, so I'll give them the opportunity to buy them first.

Once I was satisfied I'd seen and done everything I needed/wanted to, I packed up and drove home. :)

Man do my feet hurt though!!!

Sounds like a great day, Kyle!

That was nice of the judge to give you some pointers re: thin ears= poor coats sometimes, etc.

I recently found a breeder of Satins nearby and she has been helping me learn to evaluate stock and pose rabbits better.

She told me to NEVER let a rabbit back up when posing. Always have it push forward so it will settle into the judge's hand. If by "pushing" you mean she is trying to pop up, rock her body side to side to get her off balance and then set her up again.

I would just keep practicing with her, and eventually she will be less pushy.

I was really pleased and very impressed he took the time to do that, too. :) I learned a LOT...that talk with the judge alone was worth going to the show!!!

Pokerface is a pistol. She posed better for him than she ever does for me, the little snit! :p I've been working with her but man, she has a serious mind of her own!!!

Got a new grooming table though so that should help...posing her on a wooden bench isn't working, the carpet of the table will help!!! (And no...I didn't buy it...my dad and I MADE IT OURSELVES...I will post about it when it's actually finished, LOL!!! Needs some sanding, plus a few coats of stain/sealant first...)
