This morning while feeding my buck, I noticed one of his eyes was plastered shut. I did a little googling, and went to clean it out with clean warm water. That's when I noticed his lids were inflamed so that's why it was shut.
I've also noticed he hasn't been eating his feed since I brought him home--not nearly as much as i would have expected him to eat, but not 100% fasting either.
The strange thing is, itt's only on the one eye. He's been in quarantine since I bought him a few weeks ago, so I don't think he'd have picked it up from anyone else.
I'm wondering if these things are related? And if so, what it might be? Pasteurella doesn't seem to fit exactly. However, I recently moved his hutch from one part of the yard to another--could that have anything to do with it?

Any insights would be appreciated!

I am no expert so this is only an opinion...Maybe when you moved him it triggered an allergic reaction..is he near anything in bloom? Or he could have something in his eye or maybe have scratched it.. :?: A compress of a warm tea bag should help with inflammation..just hold it on the eye area for a few minutes like 10 or so. If it is just an eye infection you may need an eye antibiotic ..just a topical. .
Also check the front paws for matting and listen to his lungs for wheezing or a wet sound. watch for sneezing... These could be symptoms of pasteurella ...
You will get more advice as the day goes on..observe him so you can give reports on any other symptoms...

With the problem being one sided and him not eating well, I wonder if he doesn't have a mouth issue. I would be looking closely at that side of his jaw and mouth for an abscess or other problem.

A dental problem was my thought too, Marinea. It could be the beginning of the dreaded pasteurella, but the problem being only on one side and the poor appetite suggest a dental infection to me.

Keep him quarantined just in case!

Huh--I would never thought about a dental issue! Thanks! I'll have a look at his mouth in the morning. Is there anything in particular I should look for? He's my meat father-bun, so I don't handle him too often--I want to make sure I don't stress him out.
I read about Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment, and I'll do the compress tomorrow morning. How would i treat a dental issue?
Thank you!!
