Here's some pics...
My sister gave me this rabbit, saying that she doesn't know what happened, and she wants me to fix it.
Any input on how to treat her would be appreciated. Or is it better to just put her down?
The skin is peeling off and the eye is swollen almost closed, with white puss.
The other eye is just fine. She has not lost weight yet. Eating and drinking fine.
Thanks.

You might be able to clear it up with antibiotics and twice daily cleaning, but it will likely not ever look normal, and they eye itself may be damaged as well. I would cull.

If your looking at saving her, did your sister say if it happened suddenly or over time and when? Have you seen the eye ball itself? It could be weepy eye, blocked tear duct or maybe a scratched eye ball among other things. Might be treatable. Just in case though, is she in QT?

Yes, any rabbit with an unexplained infection should be isolated from the herd and placed in quarantine until a determination is made.

I can see a bit of the eye... my sister didn't say what happened, and I haven't got a chance to ask her yet. The doe was dropped off at my house while I was out. I will ask her more details as soon as I can... Yes she is quarantined in my basement.

Any time I see white pus from the eye or nose, my first thought is Pasteurella. The lacrimal ducts (tear ducts) drain into the sinuses, so the systems are interconnected. If it is the dreaded "P word", she has a severe infection in her sinuses and it is draining from the eye.

As Amybart said, it could be caused by something else, but personally I would not take the chance and would cull her immediately.

If you do decide to treat it, use a non-steroidal ophthalmic ointment. Steroids inhibit healing, so if it is caused by a scratch to the cornea, steroids would be counterproductive.

So she dumped the rabbit? I'm guessing she doesn't care what happens to it and that looks like it took at least 2wks to get so bad! There's no way she didn't see this getting bad, she should of done something awhile ago.
I would cull if there isn't vast improvement with a week of treatment. I'd keep a watch on her nose and bum. Kind of looks like syphilis and she pulled the scab off or something weird like that.

Actually, MamaSheepdog, I'm glad you mentioned P and bad eyes. I was wondering the other day if "nest box eye" may in fact be related or caused by P? At least, maybe those bad eyes that wane on and on could be actually caused by Pasturella and not just a dirty nest or scratches. Maybe the scratch started it and then P took over?

I have been wondering the same thing. I think that when the eyes are glued shut by the greenish crust it may be something else, but when there is white discharge sealed in the eye it is likely Pasteurella.

I have one lovely doe kit in a growout pen that had a bad case of NB eye that I didn't treat aggressively enough. There is slight scarring on the cornea.

She is headed for FC soon, and I will take a careful look at her lungs to see if there is any evidence of infection.

That is a infection , no doubt about it.. That is very sore.. Either put her down or put some polysporin eye drops in her eye three times a day for 10 days.. That is terrible. it also looks as it has a urine burn from a buck next to her. I think your sister needs to look at the rabbits more often so this dosnt go so long unnoticed.

She had it in a colony. She said it turned bad like that in 2 days. I am guessing a fight. There was no buck.

Thanks for the advise all.... I decided to try to help her, and if it didn't improve then I would cull. So I bought some pinkeye drops and some saline rinse from the drug store. She is almost 100%, and her hair is growing in nicely. Nice quick recovery, PTL.

WOW she looks fantastic! So glad for you and for her and glad you took the chance. She's a nice looking girl. :) Did you give her a name?

thanks....I think I stated treating her on the 14th. I am still treating her, and I do not know if I should be. She is not completely healed. The directions say (for humans with pinkeye) to treat for 10 days... I have gone past that, and I don't know how long to continue for.

__________ Thu Jan 24, 2013 4:38 pm __________

Well I have the 2 cali does in the house right now, and 1 of them is territorial. So I call them Psycho and Sicko...lol... No, I haven't given them actual names yet.

Glad to see she is getting better. IF it reoccurs after you stop the antibiotic drops, you will know it was more than just an injury. That is funny about the names, I had a trio of whacko does I called the "Three Furies".... lol
