I rebred my girls yesterday, any guesses on numbers this time around?

That's six does on the next round, only one is a first timer but she's a young doe so I'm not particularly worried. She's from the litter that kindled at Christmas, she's bred to my otter buck so I'm expecting otter and self. Her sire is from 'the breeder to beat' in this area and I actually kept two from this litter, even a buck. I never keep bucks
I had one doe kindle a litter of five two days ago so I bred her back yesterday since five isn't going to strain her resources at all.
The last on the list kindled this morning, eight, so I'll wait a bit before she visits the buck again. Fingers crossed, I might have finally gotten chocolate kits. :D :D

On a sadder note, I had a doe eat 10 day old kit today  The only reason I knew it was a kit was the red kit in the litter was missing and this blob was in the cage. I've never had a doe eat kits this old so what the heck?! I pulled the nestbox and put it in a carrier to deter predators and escapees.

Nope, it was in the middle of the cage and anything that could've done it would've killed the rest of the litter at the same time

__________ Mon Jun 16, 2014 9:07 pm __________

My latest kits have furred out enough that I can tell colour and I've got my first homebred chocolate otter and a lilac otter
Not quite what I expected but I'll take it certainly

It's not all that common for them to die at that age, but sometimes things happen. Mama could have stepped on it resulting in internal injuries, for instance. Since she has a good track record, I'd be inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt this time.

Yeah, no point in getting totally worked up. I can always repeat the breeding

__________ Fri Jul 04, 2014 8:37 pm __________

The rest of the litter is thriving and the doe is rock steady so I'm chalking it up to 'one of those things' and not freaking about it.
My young doe kindled last night, eight in her first litter. Yay! I haven't checked colours yet but the breeding was otter/otter so I'm expecting self and otter, probably black. I'm excited about these ones, second generation in my upgraded herd

I'm pretty happy with them, I *might* just have to start working with selfs though. I've got a ton and they're awfully nice
